The fact that they seem to be doing something about the allegation now, after he's (allegedly - which I am saying because he obviously hasn't been convicted yet, not because I don't think he didn't do it) murdered someone, suggests it's more likely to be that they didn't bother to fully investigate it, than there being little evidence. They don't need much in the way of evidence to charge someone - the level of evidence matters for prosecution and it's not up to the police to decide if the evidence available reaches the level that'd be required to convince a judge or jury beyond reasonable doubt that a crime took place. But that doesn't mean that police don't sometimes make that call anyway.
