I'm sure some of yous have seen this [petition](https://www.change.org/p/glasgow-city-council-petition-to-rename-glasgow-street-names-which-are-named-after-slave-owners?recruiter=276392991&utm_source=share_petition&utm_medium=facebook&utm_campaign=psf_combo_share_initial&utm_term=psf_combo_share_initial&recruited_by_id=c872c0f0-e1c8-11e4-b65f-6d9a19db4466&utm_content=fht-17795345-en-gb%3Av12) going round. Could the end result of changing street names in fact be detrimental to peoples understanding of the cities history? Would it not be better to bring attention to the stories behind the street names via plaques for example explaining objectively who they were named after, the reason why in the past they were named as such and the fact they benefited directly from slavery? I fear if it was the case that names were simply changed that this would almost be abdicating responsibility and washing our hands of the grim past which we really should not be covering up?
