| Body | Both my parents grew up in Easterhouse in the 60's and 70's and I spent the first few years of my life there. The flat I was born in has now been demolished. My parents moved away before I started school to another big but newer housing scheme outside glasgow in the early 80's and most of my extended family moved out in the 80's as well except for my gran who lived in Easterhouse until she died in 1990.
I haven't been to Easterhouse in decades now but I have pretty fond memories of the place but whenever I hear anyone else mention the place its usually in pretty bad terms. The implication being that anyone from there is a ned, a junkie, a benefit scrounger and so on. Techinically I'm from there as are all my family and I don't think thats a very fair assessment. When I tell people that I and my family are from there they are often surprised. I rememeber my grans neighbours being lovely and having fun playing out with the kids that lived up her close. The worst thing I remember from my own house there and other family homes was ice in the inside of the windows, damp walls and wallpaper just peeling off all the time but the people were just ordinary people.
So can anyone tell me what Easterhouse is actually like? Is it really as awful as people say or does the place just have a bad repuation and some poor housing and people are talking shite about it without actually having ever been there? |
