I recently moved into Glasgow City Council with my girlfriend, both of us are full-time students.
When the council tax letter came, we applied for exemption and didn’t pay as we are deemed exempt (previously did not pay council tax in West Dunbartonshire Council either).
However, due to an issue with the Universities system, our details were not passed on to the council meaning I have had to reapply this week, with manually scanned letters.
I have received a letter now from the council saying I owe the money from the first instalment, and if this is not paid within 7 days I must pay the full amount by 24/12, otherwise it will be passed on to the Sheriff Court and debt collectors!
I am 100% sure we qualify for exemption so I have no doubt it will go through this time, but should I pay the first instalment? If I do, will I get this money back once the exemption is processed? |
