TitleMoving to Glasgow (Advice Needed)

Hello all,

I just got a job offer and so I get to move from the Highlands to Glasgow! My family (basically everyone but me and my brother) are from there but I am not that familiar with the city in a 'living there' kind of sense since I've only visited family during my summer holidays as a kid.

Basically I will have around £1800 per month post-tax . My workplace will be just outside Glasgow in the North-East but I would prefer to live in the centre so I can visit my grampa in Bishopbriggs get through to Edinburgh to see friends and go about the city centre easily. I've had a look on RightMove and Zoopla, and it seems the going rate for a one bedroom is about 650 - 725. Does this sound about right to you? Is it feasible on my wage, taking into consideration GCC council tax bands, bills (utilities, internet, phone etc.) and food?

What areas would you recommend? I've been eyeing up the west end, since I need to be near a subway station but also particularly because I like running and love Kelvingrove Park, and have friends there - but realise I will be paying extra for the proximity. I've also been thinking about Merchant City too but I welcome any suggestions on other areas that I might not have considered.

What is your experience with letting agents such as CountryWide, Fineholm, Cairn etc.? vs. private landlords on say, Gumtree or something like that. I know to steer clear of DJ Alexander from my days as a student in Edinburgh but that's about all I know. Just want to know the ones I must avoid.

Also I have a driving license, but won't be having a car which will only add to costs. Would you recommend the SPT Zone card? I was planning on using it for commuting and for getting about on weekends.

Thank you for all your helpful suggestions :)
