TitleJob applications: what am I doing wrong?

Hey everyone!

So I been looking for a job recently without any luck, even places which are supposedly in urgent need of workers don't even give me a interview. I'm getting really frustrated and with the cost of living getting higher, soon, I may have no choice but to return to my home country since my savings run out and my partner's wage isn't enough for both of us.

I am applying mostly for retail and fast food restaurants and the occasional lab work since I have a master's in biology. I was working as a production operator but I had to give up due to my mental health so I'm really trying to avoid going back to that line of work.

A friend thinks I'm not getting hired because I'm overqualified and I should delete my master from my CV while applying for this jobs. I don't have a lot of work experience in retail (6 months as a cashier) and being a foreigner are probably not helping my case either. What do yous think? Any recommendations or advice is welcome.
