  • Bike For Good every time. More expensive than Gumtree, but at least you know you're getting a well-serviced bike, and your money is going to a good cause. by GruagachnamBeinn (Mon 17th May 2021 9:01pm)
  • I lived in the Beresford for several years. First off, all the flats are different - I'd view it before you make a decision. Some are pokey and shit, some look out onto a back alley full of bins, and some do face the central courtyard. Some of the bigger ones are beautiful, however. I shared one near the top with a pal and we loved it. The only thing is the neighbourhood noise - that was why we moved eventually as our lifestyles changed and were no longer compatible with living in party central. If you're young and it doesn't bother you or you work nights or whatever it might be bearable for a while. But get ready to fall asleep to the sound of drunk people fighting, every night of the week! There's also a student nightclub that plays shit music right next door. There are no problems with pests at all, and there's a nice mix of people live there, some young families with kids who play together in the lobby, which is cute. The party flats have mostly been stamped out over the last few years and I never had any problem with noisy neighbours over and above what you would expect in a city centre apartment building. My main reason for commenting however is to stick up for the concierge. If he was grumpy with other commenters, maybe they did something to deserve it! We found him to be a lovely wee man who would do anything for you. By the time I left I kinda felt like he was my dad. TLDR: The individual flats vary wildly; it's noisy AF; and the concierge is a legend :) by GruagachnamBeinn (Mon 17th May 2021 8:52pm)

  • Good to hear - at least people *are* getting vaccinated. By what I've seen over the past few weeks, I imagine everyone was just pissed at the weekend. Sunday at the Hydro was a surreal experience... by GruagachnamBeinn (Tue 25th May 2021 6:37am)
  • Aye there's magic wee bits of the southside these days, I just don't know it well enough to recommend. I've lived and worked in most areas on the north side of the river, and I think paying that wee bit extra in rent in the West End is worthwhile both because you will save as much on transport, and also because it's just a nice place to live. A small one-bed in Partick certainly wouldn't set you back much more than the same in Dennistoun these days anyway, and you would spend a lot less time waiting for buses. If the OP's just coming for a short while, she might as well see the best of the place. by GruagachnamBeinn (Tue 25th May 2021 6:47am)
  • P.S. OP - Don't bother with the City Centre unless you find the sound of drunk people fighting with each other every night conducive to a good night's sleep! Been there done that, it wears you down pretty quick. by GruagachnamBeinn (Tue 25th May 2021 6:51am)
  • I guess you must live on a tucked-away street, not venture out after dark, and go to your bed early. I lived in the Beresford for several years and drunk people screaming was literally the soundtrack to my life by GruagachnamBeinn (Tue 25th May 2021 11:13am)
  • I'm sure Dennistoun's a fine bit to live in, but working there for a few years put me off for life... by GruagachnamBeinn (Tue 25th May 2021 11:21am)
  • God did you get chucked out your flat in the West End or something? Sounds personal... I've lived in the West End on and off over the past 20+ years, if anything there's less chainstores now. Mind there was a Burger King on Byres Road 25 years ago? Hard to imagine now, although in saying that most main streets are pretty dull, and not where you go to find the interesting stuff. As a female living alone it's just nice to live somewhere where you don't get followed along the road at night - personally I find that worth the expense. • I didn't tell you to support anything. You clearly consider yourself to be an exemplary citizen, but I just wonder what would motivate someone to go bitching on the internet about desperate people who're obviously in a bad way in the middle of a global crisis. Seems an odd use of someone's time and energy, that's all. by GruagachnamBeinn (Wed 26th May 2021 4:13pm)
  • P.S. You're not in a position to call anyone judgemental when you literally called folk begging in the street 'wasters' and 'scumbags'. by GruagachnamBeinn (Wed 26th May 2021 4:16pm)
  • You know nothing about me, and you're wrong. Comments like yours tend to come from ignorant spoilt brats who would run crying for their mammies if confronted with the kind of trauma that makes a human being become an addict. Straight to the burny fire for you, sunshine by GruagachnamBeinn (Wed 26th May 2021 5:19pm)
  • Does he sound like someone whose shoes you'd like to step into? I'm guessing not. Ponder then for a minute what kind of things might happen to a person in life to turn them into a 'borderline sociopathic gambling addict', homeless or not. I'm not suggesting everyone goes and makes pals with the guy, just that making the effort to go online to bitch about another human being whose life is clearly a disaster is not really a productive use of anyone's time, and it's strange to me that someone would take the time out of their presumably busy day to do such a thing. by GruagachnamBeinn (Wed 26th May 2021 5:23pm)
  • Ah and you will notice the OP seems to have relocated his conscience and deleted his post. Just you ghouls left by GruagachnamBeinn (Wed 26th May 2021 5:27pm)
  • May I remind you that my original reply was in response to an OP who referred to beggars as 'wasters' and 'scumbags', and took the time out of his day to post this on the internet about people less fortunate than himself. If that's the side you've picked, on you go champ. Incidentally the OP has seen the error of his ways and deleted his post. Just you ghouls left, haranguing people at length for pointing out your callousness. Away and shite - you maybe reflect on that. by GruagachnamBeinn (Wed 26th May 2021 6:32pm)
  • Not the kind who constructs a whole reddit post around punching down at people less fortunate than myself. Being decent is quite easy if you try. by GruagachnamBeinn (Wed 26th May 2021 6:42pm)
  • I'm not engaging with you or answering your questions no, because I don't consider them worthwhile or valid and I am under no obligation to you. You seem like a very angry wee person. That's cute that you have time to read through my posting history. Enjoy the rest of your night, mate. by GruagachnamBeinn (Wed 26th May 2021 7:02pm)

  • I'm a member at the Arly, also a serious swimmer - don't bother with it just now. Usually you get a lane to yourself for the duration which is why I joined - I do 2k every morning. Just now due to Covid regs it's rotational swimming only, and as the majority of the members are 50yrs+, heads-out-the-water, social swimmers, unless having to overtake three grannies every 21m length sounds like your idea of fun, it's a nightmare. If you can go in the last hour every night you might be okay though, it's dead then. I would also say Scotstoun if it wasn't closed - it's about the only other pool in the West End you can get a decent swim in. Someone else said North Woodside but I used to swim there, again it's like granny soup most mornings and they all come and swim in the 'fast' lane regardless, also I got kinda sick of the changing rooms always being covered in piss and nobody clearing it up, the place is rank. Looks like Tollcross is probably your only option tbh. Alternatively you could get the train to Milngavie and cycle three miles (uphill) to Dumbrock Loch, which is magic for a swim. Weather looks good at the weekend anyway :) by GruagachnamBeinn (Thu 27th May 2021 5:44pm)
  • P.S. Only good thing about the Arly just now is you don't have to book and can go every day if you want - not many other places doing that under current regs. by GruagachnamBeinn (Thu 27th May 2021 5:45pm)
  • Yeah to be fair I've worked around it mostly, but then there's been days when I've sat on the poolside for an hour watching four people swimming up and down slow as a week in the jail, not one of them thinking, oh maybe I can go swim in the other lane as swimming in circles with that two will not impinge on my swim in any way, and let the fast person get a swim. I could get in a lane and make them swim rotation if I want, but it would cause utter chaos and make things unpleasant for everyone, so I don't, I wait. Which is infuriating on a number of levels, although hey isn't everything now. Not to be melodramatic but as a swimmer this past year really has been *the worst time to be alive.* Another lockdown and I'm gonna move into my tent on some lochside for the rest of the summer! by GruagachnamBeinn (Thu 27th May 2021 7:08pm)
  • Sucks eh? The Covid regs make no allowances for people who swim at different speeds, or even just with their head *in* the water. I suggested a fast lane/slow lane, I suggested a lane swimmers' hour, all met with a reaction as if I'd suggested licking doorknobs. I think the past year has been a real playground for the kind of folk who enjoy enforcing arbitrary and pointless rules for the sake of it. My mind is still blown by the fact that they have continued with the pretence than somehow squeezing twelve people in the pool in two lanes is somehow more socially-distanced than having seven people in the pool... I am also a non-driver and highly envious of those who could just scoot off to a loch instead. It's a three hour round trip to Dumbrock for me (not including the swimming). Balloch is alright on the train btw - but again, 45 mins travel and then about 20 mins walk through the park until you get to a suitable swimming spot. by GruagachnamBeinn (Fri 28th May 2021 6:31am)
  • Haha yeah I know what you mean, but the Arly has always been different. Under normal circumstances you get a lane to yourself for however long you want to swim for, which is why someone like me, a mad obsessive swimmer who loses the plot if they don't knock out 100 lengths in the morning, will happily pay out £40+ a month for the privilege. Like I don't really mind sharing lanes at Scotstoun cos there's always about three different speed lanes, and the floaters swim elsewhere. In the Arly though I'd be thundering up and down ducking in and out inbetween several heads-uppers, probably annoying them and not being able to swim properly heads-down or get a tumble turn in half the time, not getting remotely in the zone, and spending the whole time stressing about who I need to overtake next. Not my idea of a good time! I swim there specifically because I hate overtaking, it's stressful and everybody hates you - nobody wants to be that guy. People make it difficult for you too, even when it's the 20th time you've overtaken them they'll still kick their wee legs faster when they see you approach and drag it out as long as they can! I know the pool has to follow Gov regs, but it's just a shame they couldn't have worked out something more sensible that allowed for different abilities of swimmers. Just now it's kind of like having a running track and only accommodating joggers. by GruagachnamBeinn (Fri 28th May 2021 11:22am)
  • Ha, you just cannae call it the now eh? Friday mornings are usually busy, but I got a magic uninterrupted 45-min swim this morning - was the only one in the pool for much of it. Yesterday though I sat about on the poolside waiting and talking to the staff for an hour and a half, got 12 lengths done and gave up. Looking forward to getting a dip in a loch sometime over the next few days instead :) by GruagachnamBeinn (Fri 28th May 2021 2:54pm)

  • The following website has guides to many walks across Scotland. There are numerous other websites like it - GIYF: [https://www.walkhighlands.co.uk/glasgow/](https://www.walkhighlands.co.uk/glasgow/) The Ordnance Survey maps are available on Bing Maps. Paths are represented with dotted lines. Look for a dotted line that starts near a railway station or bus stop, follow it and see if it leads to somewhere you might want to go. Don't camp by roads or in view of houses. Try and find a breezy spot so you're not trapped in your tent by an angry swarm of midges. If you're an absolute beginner, the top of Conic Hill is a shout - just not at the weekend or it'll be like camping in the middle of Sauchiehall Street. Good luck :) by GruagachnamBeinn (Wed 2nd Jun 2021 9:53am)

  • If you're making a day of it, head over to Arran or Bute. Local buses will take you to the beachy bits, i.e. Ettrick Bay on Bute; Arran you've got Brodick, Lamlash, Whiting Bay etc. Nice wee beaches around Cumbrae also. Will all be quieter, cleaner and prettier than Troon, Ayr, Largs etc. Plus you get to go on a boat! by GruagachnamBeinn (Thu 3rd Jun 2021 10:45am)
  • It's fine: train to Balloch, cross the road to get the bus, 20 mins or so to Balmaha. I've done it before to go up Conic Hill. To be fair if you just walk north through Balloch Country Park you'll find yourself a wee beach on the loch among the trees no bother - I nip up there for a swim sometimes. http://www.spt.co.uk/cms/wp-content/uploads/2015/04/Service-309.pdf by GruagachnamBeinn (Thu 3rd Jun 2021 12:03pm)
  • They're still recommending you book for foot passengers, which is probably advisable for Arran. You could probably chance it during the week though. Cumbrae you don't need to book which is worth bearing in mind if Arran's out. by GruagachnamBeinn (Thu 3rd Jun 2021 11:59am)
  • The point is, it's not private property, it's a public space. Your taxes already pay for it, then they fence it off and charge you entry so commercial companies and their pals in the cooncil profit? Come *on* by GruagachnamBeinn (Thu 3rd Jun 2021 8:23pm)
  • I only started cycling recently and every time I've been shouted at for cycling on the pavement it's been by some fat roaster of a bloke. When I go after them to explain that I only got the bike weeks ago and am not yet confident cycling in traffic in a country with next to no cycle lanes and one of the highest rates of cycling fatalities in the world, in which case I am perfectly allowed to cycle on the pavement as long as I do so slowly and carefully and give way to pedestrians, as I always do, it suddenly seems they don't actually want to have a conversation and scurry away looking scared. You'd almost think they just got some kind of thrill from shouting at a female in the street? by GruagachnamBeinn (Thu 3rd Jun 2021 8:32pm)

  • Mate I asked the polis. Google it, or phone them yourself if you want. If you're 'fearful of traffic', in Scotland you are allowed to use the pavement until you get to somewhere you can cycle safely. How on earth would I get to the cycle paths from my house without using a road or pavement anyway? Thanks for the mansplain though eh! by GruagachnamBeinn (Fri 4th Jun 2021 7:20am)
  • **“The introduction of the fixed penalty is not aimed at responsible cyclists who sometimes feel obliged to use the pavement out of fear of traffic and who show consideration to other pavement users when doing so. Chief police officers, who are responsible for enforcement, acknowledge that many cyclists, particularly children and young people, are afraid to cycle on the road, sensitivity and careful use of police discretion is required.”** Home Office advice to police at the time the law was introduced. Phone the police and ask yourself, like I did. You've not answered how I get to cycle paths without, uhm, cycling. I will not cycle on busy roads in this country until there are proper cycle paths, I will continue to use the pavement when I feel I need to, and I would happily go to court for it. However I won't have to, because it's allowed, and that will be why dozens of cop cars have passed me doing so already without so much as a second glance. The downvotes were for saying something negative about males, don't be disingenuous. Now if you'll excuse me I have work to do, you have a lovely day doing something more constructive yourself now. by GruagachnamBeinn (Fri 4th Jun 2021 7:34am)

You tell me to grow up and here you are, spending your morning harassing a woman for the above 'crime'. The polis are not going to fine me for going onto the pavement when I need to, under the exceptions to the law that were made clear when the Home Office legislated it, and also because they're adults. Stop a polis on the street and ask like I did, see what they tell you. I very much doubt any of you follow the absolute letter of the law in life anyway, you are all just taking the opportunity to mansplain your insanely petty non-point to a female cyclist, like the bunch of pathetic reddit neckbeard cliches you are. • OMG FUCKING THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Wish I could upvote you a million times, sensible, rational, compassionate human. Funnily enough, I've pootled past old ladies on the pavement before, rung my bell, said 'Excuse me madam, just behind you on the left, sorry I'm a beginner', and they've always been like, 'oh don't worry dear, I would rather you cycled here than got hit by a car'. *They* seem to get it! Just last night on my way home, it was 9pm and the main road I was coming up to was empty, so I thought I'd give it a shot - 30 seconds later some boy racer came hooring along at what must have been 60mph - on a city centre road! At the end of the day I'll happily cycle on main roads a) when they build real, useable bike lanes on them (not the kiddy-on, tokenistic, now you see 'em now you don't numbers they're bashing out just now to tick 'eco' boxes), or b) when mostly male motorists stop driving like complete fucking psychopaths. Until then, I'll cycle where I feel safest at any given time, and fuck anyone who says otherwise. I'm not usually an angry person, but I worked in pubs for 20 years and have had quite enough of being spoken down to by men - cf. Janey Godley on Twitter! Thanks again for your input. • That's shocking, that's not hospitality! Never go back. by GruagachnamBeinn (Sat 5th Jun 2021 9:27pm)
  • I worked in hospitality for decades, we would never have batted an eyelid at a single diner. In fact prior to the days when every second person was an influencer and Insta-ed fuck out of their meal, in more upmarket establishments you would have to inform the manager and chef of a single diner in case they were a reviewer, and they would always get better scran. So aye go for it, nobody cares. I love eating alone, especially on holiday. by GruagachnamBeinn (Sat 5th Jun 2021 9:26pm)
  • *Not* the city centre - its like some weird ghost town and the pubs will be chaos. Probably better going somewhere West End, Southside, East End? Drygate, West on the Green, Viccy Road, Finnieston? by GruagachnamBeinn (Sun 6th Jun 2021 11:04am)
  • Aye you're right, but it's just wee mad students mostly. Marginally less stabby than the city centre crowd... Folk have just gone nuts on the whole though eh? by GruagachnamBeinn (Sun 6th Jun 2021 12:10pm)
  • Having served him in the pub numerous times, can confirm 👍 by GruagachnamBeinn (Tue 8th Jun 2021 8:00am)
  • >Really interesting post, thanks for this. When you say 'I think this is because in the last 10 years we’ve gained access to the rest of the world' and 'The horizons opened up for people in Scotland', what do you mean exactly? Like what happened ten years ago that opened things up, from your perspective? by GruagachnamBeinn (Tue 8th Jun 2021 6:15pm)
  • Thanks for taking the time to give such a detailed reply, I appreciate it. I had a feeling it would be something to do with the internet but wasn't sure how. I think I'm probably a wee bit older than you - I grew up in a rough area famous for young teams in the 80s and early 90s, and mind going to the shop with my gran and having to cross the road and take the long route cos there were 'bad boys' hanging about, hearing about folk getting stabbed at the chippy, etc. I moved away to another city to go to Uni, which was the first time I'd had internet access, so it wasn't part of my life growing up. Regarding uni, I only got into the course I wanted to do because in those heady Blairite days my school was so bad it was part of a scheme whereby the unis had to take a certain number of us a year. After that we were abandoned with no follow-up support in a world totally alien to us. Needless to say I made a mess of uni the first time around and ended up in shit jobs for years. As you say we had grants then, but academia was such a codified milieu, as a working class person you didn't really stand a chance unless you had super-educated autodidact parents or something (and I didn't) - I went back 15 years later though and smashed it! I did notice the second time around that the demographic had definitely changed. Students on the whole are posher and squarer than they were in the 90s - or they certainly are at the Russell Group uni I was at. I probably found it harder money-wise they second time as the costs of living have risen so much, and also psychologically because I felt like I stuck out a lot more. So aye I wasn't there to witness the demise of the young teams or see how it happened, all I know is that the area I grew up in had been 'gentrified'. I have also never 'done' social media, so it's mad to me how much of an effect that's had in turning everyone into these wee globalised consumers. Scotland has always had a massive crush on the US since the days of the 18th-19th century emigrations to the so-called New World(s), so it's fascinating how that's intensified in modern times due to the internet. Also one last thing: I have a pal who is a retired criminal defence lawyer who says you saw a massive decrease in gang violence in Glasgow when weed started to become more readily available from the early 80s onwards. The wee guys were just getting too chonged to cause any bother. I do wonder if the skunk phenomenon has had a similar effect in more recent years! by GruagachnamBeinn (Wed 9th Jun 2021 7:29am)

  • Cheers again, interesting post. You have some really perceptive insights about this stuff and should write it up formally into an article - there are numerous online blogs that would publish it. These are important issues that not enough is written about, because folk like you and I don't tend to reach the position in life where we get our writing about our experiences published. There's room for more than one Darren McGarvey out there! Fully with you on the puff issue. I believe in the weed as a positive force, not just psychologically but in the future it could be a real blessing economically for an independent Scotland - look at Colorado etc. I'm very much for a return to small-scale farming in Scotland - we've got plenty space for it, and it doesn't have to be tatties and kale. Imagine how much happier someone currently working in some shitty call centre or whatever would be in a wee cottage up north with a sweet hydroponic set-up in their barn. Also agree about the mental health/addiction issue - as someone who worked in the licenced trade for many years, I am all too aware that all alkies have a very good reason for drinking. Cheers re: uni - I could write a fucking book about class and higher education, it's been some ride. You're right about the fact that you're expected to have this fully middle-class general knowledge already, and their snotty-ass attitude towards folk *not* knowing stuff doesn't fucking help either. Like you're an educator, explain it, don't shame people for not having read Chaucer as a child or whatever! Through my second run at uni I saw the other students from ordinary backgrounds - especially the mature students - drop like flies. They don't realise how much they whole set-up rankles with folk who aren't used to that standard middle-class passive aggressive mode of address. Most of them just think, fuck this, why am I getting myself in debt to come here and be patronised by these uptight superior clowns who know fuck all about real life, and quit before they get anywhere. Then of course, they're 'just not cut out for it...' The tragedy of this is that the unis desperately *need* folk from diverse backgrounds with original takes on things. I'm now getting funded to do a PhD and basically get left to do whatever I want, cos they view me as some kind of mad genius. In reality I got here not because I am particularly clever, but 100% because of the experience and people skills I built up over 20+ years living and working in the real world, which directly informs my work and gives me an edge over folk who have spent their whole lives in the academic bubble studying exactly the same subject as their Professor parents did (about 50% of academics btw). To get here however, I've had to practice superhuman levels of tolerance to deal with the eye-rolls when you bring up even the tamest of life experiences, the heads cocked to one side desperately trying to understand your (perfectly normal) accent, the rude questions and insulting assumptions etc. - if I didn't think what I was studying is the most important thing in the world, I'd have quit long ago too. Anyway. TL;DR: write something - you clearly have a lot of value to say! by GruagachnamBeinn (Thu 10th Jun 2021 7:41am)
  • You too pal - all the best when you go back, and you should. They need us more than we need them - I started doing a lot better at uni when I finally realised this! Slàinte mhath :) by GruagachnamBeinn (Fri 11th Jun 2021 6:47am)
  • There are racists everywhere, nowhere is perfect, but Glasgow is closer than most! Google Kenmure Street and you'll see the typical Glaswegian attitude towards immigrants :) by GruagachnamBeinn (Sat 12th Jun 2021 12:34pm)
  • A potentially unpopular opinion, but I'm more disappointed that we have got to the stage that a freaking *cafe* now apparently has to have a 'board of directors'. 'Calling an executive meeting guys - shall we borrow a bag of coffee beans from the place across the road or the one next door? Who's on cutlery-polishing today? Can someone call the dishwasher repair guy?' This stuff's getting beyond parody... by GruagachnamBeinn (Sat 12th Jun 2021 1:11pm)
  • I wasn't - I said there were racists everywhere, which there are, but that Glasgow is generally a very welcoming place. by GruagachnamBeinn (Sun 13th Jun 2021 12:01pm)
  • The Cobbler - if you get the bus they'll drop you at the bottom, otherwise train to Arrochar and very pleasant 40-min walk to the start. One of the best hills in Scotland, even though it gets fucking busy. I camped up there a few years ago and must have passed 50 people on the way down the next morning, including a Russian lady in fishnets and kitten heels, carrying a chihuahua. Not even joking. Ben Lomond - the fun-est way is to get an early bus up to Tarbet and the water bus over to Rowardennan. Don't even think about going up the tourist path, a relentless slog of false summits - Google the Ptarmigan route, steeper but bonnier and quicker. You can come back down the main path. You can get over to Arran and get up Goatfell and back in a day - the circuit down via Glen Rosa is awesome and there are lovely pools in the river there for a cool down after. Cumbrae's a right nice day out (during the week, outside of school hols!) - you can hire a bike over there, and there are numerous excellent chippy options on your way back there and in Largs. I could go on... Hope the weather's on your side :) by GruagachnamBeinn (Sun 13th Jun 2021 3:23pm)
  • This is true, Glasgow folk apparently melt in the rain. by GruagachnamBeinn (Mon 14th Jun 2021 1:33pm)
  • It's a great big broad river valley, clouds gather here and stick unfortunately. I used to live in a high rise building and you could see it all happen - sometimes there was just a wee sliver of blue sky on the horizon. Contrary to popular belief, you generally get better weather in the Highlands (with the exception of various other cloud-traps up there) - windier and more changeable. In the islands and north of Inverness in particular, it's rare for it to be cloudy and rainy for days on end like happens down here. To be fair, it's been a particularly shite spring and early summer - the worst I remember in several years. by GruagachnamBeinn (Mon 14th Jun 2021 1:32pm)
  • I know eh, so many outdoors guides etc. just assume everyone has a car. Just think of the public transport routes and have a look on the map to see where you fancy - so on the train for a day-trip you've got the Ayrshire coast; northwards you have the Oban line which will take you to the Arrochar Alps; the Fort Bill train which will take you to bits of the West Highland Way north of Loch Lomond; and the Snekkie train which goes through Perthshire and Stirling. Buses you've got the Oban bus which will also take you to Arrochar and further to the hills around the Rest and Be Thankful area; and the Fort Bill/Skye bus that goes up the west side of Loch Lomond. Walkhighlands is searchable for walks accessible by public transport, although some of the others are actually a relatively short walk from transport links. A few more ready-made days out: Get the train to Weymss Bay and the boat to Bute - you could go to Mount Stuart (a phenomenally trippy stately home with amazing gardens), or get the bus to Kilchattan Bay and walk the circular route which takes in awesome views of Arran and a very atmospheric old ruined chapel called St Blane's. Have a drink in the Weymss Bay station bar on your way back, the regulars are great craic. Get the train to Dunkeld & Birnam (this is only about £16 day return btw, bargain) and go for a walk round the Hermitage. If you like trees you'll be in heaven. Cracking bakers for lunch snacks and nice pubs for a drink after in Dunkeld. Get the train to Balloch and the bus to Balmaha to go up Conic Hill - do it as early as you can but, it's like bloody Sauchiehall Street after about 11am. Train to Gourock, ferry to Dunoon, bus to Benmore Botanic Gardens - you can also take in Puck's Glen while you're there. Dumgoyne Hill is unglamorous but has great views and is less than an hour on the bus from the city centre. There's a distillery right next to it! Stirling's a nice day out if you've never been before - so much history, and the woods around the Wallace Monument are lovely for a walk. Anyway mibbes when the OP's outta the B&B jail I can start on the camping trips via public transport, but not now cos I'll be here all night lol. Happy tramping! :) by GruagachnamBeinn (Mon 14th Jun 2021 7:47pm)
  • If you want to get out of town for a day, Goatfell on Arran is probably the nicest hill to do as a day-trip. Get an early train to Ardrossan and the boat to Arran. There is a wee bus takes you to the bottom of the hill, at the castle. Even if you don't make it all the way up, you'll have a lovely day out in Brodick: https://www.walkhighlands.co.uk/arran/goatfell.shtml If you're veggie I recommend Ranjit's Kitchen on the south side. Have a great time :) by GruagachnamBeinn (Wed 16th Jun 2021 11:33am)
  • You need a good waterproof jacket with a hood. Some decent jumpers (you'll find reasonable-priced wool and cashmere in vintage shops over here), a wooly hat and gloves. Umbrellas are often useless in the wind! If you want to see autumn in all its glory take the train up to Dunkeld one day - only £16-ish return. Google The Hermitage and you'll see what I'm talking about. The winter is a lovely time to hire a car and see a bit of the Highlands. Have fun - as far as cities go, it's not so bad :) by GruagachnamBeinn (Wed 16th Jun 2021 11:45am)

  • There's no such thing as 'Celtic culture and ethnicity'. Celtic is a branch of the language tree than includes Irish and Scottish Gaelic, Welsh, Breton, Cornish, etc. These are all distinct living cultures and any attempt to mash them together into some kind of mystical 'Celtic' ethnic identity is historically and linguistically illiterate and offensive to living Celtic-language-speaking communities, not to mention the worst kind of dumb internet wooo-woo with rather suspicious undertones of US white supremacy. I'd say have a think about why you've received so much 'abuse' for your comments, but I'm sure you'll just carry on telling yourself you're right and everyone else is wrong. More people trying open water swimming = more accidents, same as any activity where risk is involved. Is that like sheltered housing for ageing yachties? Never knew such places existed. Went further up the coast and then back for a potential swim... • It's been like this for decades now - it tends to come in waves. I'm about ten years off the party scene now but have plenty of similar stories to yours - my social group lost three in as many months one dark winter in the noughties. I worked in bars for 20+ years and by the end of it I was routinely shocked by the kinda folk going to the bogs in pairs and coming back with crusty noses talking rapid shite - it seemed to be everyone and their da - literally - was on it. I think it goes hand in hand with drink in Glasgow, which obvs has historically been a massive problem, and ching just enables them to drink more for longer. Prohibition is why we have all those manky ching dealers who think they're fucking Tony Montana. I personally think mental health care (or the lack of it) is at the root of the problem. by GruagachnamBeinn (Sat 11th Sep 2021 11:01am)

  • Just an arsey, pretentious, shit-talking egomaniac, mainly, a chronic alk swanning about in leather breeks and acting the twat. There is an even more unpleasant side to the man but I'd best not get specific about that on here! by GruagachnamBeinn (Sat 18th Sep 2021 10:12pm)
  • LOL - okay, let's just say if you're female you don't want to get into an alcohol-fuelled 'heated debate' with the guy. Heard stories off a few different sources about such situations turning physical - *allegedly*. Can't imagine him acting up like that with his actual missus however, who is like something off Prisoner Cell Block H, and probably keeps his nads in a jar on the mantlepiece. I have *many* other stories about Lovely Justin but they would be hard to tell without making it really obvious exactly where it is I know him from... I will say however that I've never in my 20-year pub career taken so much pleasure from telling someone they're not allowed any more drink, on numerous occasions. by GruagachnamBeinn (Sun 19th Sep 2021 9:10am)
  • It's a warning call, they do this to warn other squirrels about a threat in the area, usually a cat. It's not you - they're not particularly scared of humans. Or at least the ones I hand-feed nuts to and tickle behind the ears in my garden every day sure aren't. Before anyone starts with the 'invasive species' crap, it's hardly their fault they're here, they didnae make wee mad grey squirrel boats and travel across the ocean all of their own accord. Humans are the only truly invasive species! by GruagachnamBeinn (Mon 20th Sep 2021 12:34pm)
  • Well you would presumably know by GruagachnamBeinn (Mon 20th Sep 2021 12:35pm)
  • Hahahaha Seamus that's hilarious - I thought you were being sarcastic with the 'Lovely Justin' patter, such is my completely contrasting experience of the guy. It sure ain't timescale-related as the last time I served him a pint was only about five years ago, and he was defo still sporting the leather 'rock star' breeks on a regular basis. Mibbe he fancied someone who worked in your pub and was on his best behaviour, who knows... I am aware of this 'Glasgow-famous' phenomenon that you describe... Some of them do indeed become insufferable - female bar staff can certainly tell you all about that lol. As much as I miss the craic sometimes, there are many reasons I am very glad I no longer work in the licenced trade. by GruagachnamBeinn (Mon 20th Sep 2021 12:54pm)
  • Can confirm this - it took our building well over a year to get an extremely anti-social tenant who was literally ruining everyone's lives evicted, you will have ages 'til the shit really hits the fan. Fuck the rent, feed yourself and pay whatever bills you need to keep going. As someone else said, talk to your HA - they'd much rather suspend your rent for a couple of months than go through the expensive and lengthy process of eviction. Don't panic - there's quite a lot of work going at the moment and you can fix this. by GruagachnamBeinn (Mon 20th Sep 2021 1:05pm)
  • Not gonna lie I love the wee critters, they're fascinating. Do you know they're cleverer than dugs? True facts. I looked it up after I saw one use a leaf like a wee towel to wipe his wee hands. They're totally trainable - some of my wee squirrel pals understand 'up', 'wait', '*no*', etc., and as I say there are a few that will tolerate a wee pet on the heid now too. They come peering in my windaes if they want fed, they're hilarious. by GruagachnamBeinn (Mon 20th Sep 2021 2:43pm)

  • I see you have found Wikipedia, and your cut and paste function - good work. However you have altered the content to suit your previous error, which is a bit sneaky hey! You still haven't provided a source for your '1450' date - I'm guessing because you made it up. Here is what Wikipedia actually says: **The area around Glasgow has hosted communities for millennia, with the River Clyde providing a natural location for fishing. The Romans later built outposts in the area and, to protect Roman Britannia from the Brittonic speaking (Celtic) Caledonians, constructed the Antonine Wall. Items from the wall, such as altars from Roman forts like Balmuildy, can be found at the Hunterian Museum today.** ***Glasgow itself was reputed to have been founded by the Christian missionary Saint Mungo in the 6th century*****. He established a church on the Molendinar Burn, where the present Glasgow Cathedral stands, and in the following years Glasgow became a religious centre. Glasgow grew over the following centuries. The Glasgow Fair reportedly began in the year 1190.\[18\] The first bridge over the River Clyde at Glasgow was recorded from around 1285, giving its name to the Briggait area of the city, forming the main north–south route over the river via Glasgow Cross. The founding of the University of Glasgow in 1451 and elevation of the bishopric to become the Archdiocese of Glasgow in 1492 increased the town's religious and educational status and landed wealth. Its early trade was in agriculture, brewing and fishing, with cured salmon and herring being exported to Europe and the Mediterranean.** If you even just Google, 'when was the city of Glasgow founded?', this is what you get - maybe you can read the big letters here a bit better: **https://www.google.com/search?q=when+was+the+city+of+glasgow+founded&rlz=1C1OPNX\_en-GBGB932GB933&oq=when+was+the+city+of&aqs=chrome.0.0i512j69i57j0i512l8.3952j0j7&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8** Get a grip of yourself 😂 by GruagachnamBeinn (Sat 2nd Oct 2021 10:14am)

It just means they literally 'pushed ahead with a bunch of 'greening' projects', as you said. I find this whole 'putting Glasgow on the map' thing weird weird tbh, anywhere you go in the world folk are like, 'no way you're from Glasgow! Cool city.' • I'm a long-term loner and honestly 100% prefer doing most things myself. I've got loads of friends, just not many I see more than a couple of times a year, which is how I like it. I'm not good at compromising and would resent someone who stopped me from doing the things I want to do, so I don't put myself - or anyone else - in that situation. When I do meet friends we tend to just go for a drink and shoot the breeze rather than any kind of organised activities. Anyone who went on holiday with me would probably want to murder me by the end anyway, as they will be on the go from 7am to midnight and will get dragged to about ten museums a day. Anyway point being there are folk all over the place not letting a lack of company hold them back and just getting on with it - I meet them wherever I go. I went to the pictures one afternoon the other week actually and there were a dozen people there on their own and nobody else. One of the joys of doing things alone - especially travelling - is that you'll find everybody wants to talk to you, and if that doesn't sound like fun, you can mentally put on your invisibility cloak and radiate 'fuck off' vibes and they will leave you alone. I don't think making ordinary people feel guilty about their two weeks in Magaluf is the answer to a structural, political problem. Folk go on holiday to escape their bullshit jobs and because they've been pounded with advertising telling them consumption is their only escape. The solution is to eat our rich oppressors, thus liberating us all. Then it's just the pedestrians walking along eyes glued to their phones you need to worry about... by GruagachnamBeinn (Wed 20th Oct 2021 11:35am)

  • 100% sensible, and yet someone has downvoted you already! If ever I have to use the pavement, I do so at about 2mph and am easily the most alert and attentive person on it - the only 'near misses' I've ever had with pedestrians would have occurred if I were on foot, i.e. someone looking at their phone, doing a dramatic u-turn without looking, etc. And yet many times I've had people of a certain demographic (male, older than me, usually rather portly) shout at me to get off the pavement when I've not been in anyone's way. I usually ask them to point out which cycle lane they'd like me to use instead - oh that's right! There *aren't* any... I don't get it, in 40+ years of being a non-driving pedestrian I've *never* had any issues with cyclists. I think some people just like an excuse to shout at someone in the street. by GruagachnamBeinn (Wed 20th Oct 2021 1:16pm)
  • That's genuinely shit for your pal, but I literally don't have the time to tell you about all my cycling pals who have almost been killed by drivers. Used to share a flat with a bike courier who got knocked off their bike at least once a week. I think the answer for everyone is proper bike lanes city-wide. That and fuck off to the gig economy bastards making cyclists sacrifice safety for speed, which is undoubtedly what would have been behind your pal's accident. Proud to say I've never used Uber in my life. by GruagachnamBeinn (Wed 20th Oct 2021 1:20pm)
  • Nae bother - it's a shit situation but hopefully one good thing that may result from COP26 is that it'll shame them into action on the transport front at least. And folk wonder why I refuse to cycle on main roads in Glasgow! Thank you for doing the work that you do 🙏 by GruagachnamBeinn (Wed 20th Oct 2021 3:12pm)
  • Ashton Lane has been shite since about 1998 by GruagachnamBeinn (Wed 20th Oct 2021 6:47pm)
  • Can you *imagine* \- no really, just try for a second - what it would take for you to think stabbing someone was not just an okay thing to do, but actually cool? That kind of rage and pain doesn't come from nowhere. If you can see past your urge to virtue-signal here (well done you for being such a special little angel! Gold fucking star), you might be able to feel some pity for someone who had clearly desperately lost their way in life at a horrifically tender age. And yes I know folk who've lived dog's lives and never hurt a fly, but I also know folk who have lead very privileged lives and are vile to those around them. People are different. There but for fortune go you pal - as your granny should have told you at some point. by GruagachnamBeinn (Thu 21st Oct 2021 9:34am)
  • Seems you just came here to tell us what a wonderful, superior, fortunate person you are, so much better than 'wee fuckin bams', aren't you just? by GruagachnamBeinn (Thu 21st Oct 2021 9:56am)
  • Made the mistake of looking at his profile. He seems to have spent 33 years sitting on his sofa gaming, which would explain a lot... by GruagachnamBeinn (Thu 21st Oct 2021 11:14am)
  • Away and boil yer heid, you hateful wee person by GruagachnamBeinn (Thu 21st Oct 2021 11:12am)
  • You are obviously very naive about people; hence my comment about gaming. I'd say you need to get out more, but please - spare us. For someone who apparently understood not to stab people at 14, it's ironic that at 33 you are still struggling to grasp that it's not all about GoOd AnD eViL - a toddlers'-eye view of the world. Don't assume gender. Now fuck off by GruagachnamBeinn (Thu 21st Oct 2021 12:02pm)
  • You're just ranting now, and looking *very* silly by GruagachnamBeinn (Thu 21st Oct 2021 12:36pm)
  • You know I've been thinking about what the people who are downvoting this are, I mean are you viciously judgemental, or really sheltered, or just lack a grasp of basic human psychology, or what? And I've decided you're all just *really fucking stupid* and can't get your tiny, shrivelled-up wee minds around shit that isn't black and white. This kind of soul-crushing cynicism is exactly what ended my other brief forays into social media, and it's what's ended this one. I sincerely hope the world shows you as little mercy and understanding as you have shown here. Bye Reddit, it's been fucking depressing! by GruagachnamBeinn (Thu 21st Oct 2021 4:39pm)
