  • I stopped using Network after a similar situation where I know the driver stole my phone and then said he couldn't find it in the car. Funny, cause I know I put it down on the back seat when I got the money out to pay him and immediately realised as he was driving away that I'd left it... by end_transmission_ (Tue 17th Dec 2019 1:15am)
  • As weans we used to go swimming up Neilston pads south of the city. Just take the train there and it's a 15/20 minute walk from the station I think, reasonably countrified n all. Not been in 10 years or more but so not sure it's even still accessible. by end_transmission_ (Fri 10th Jan 2020 11:46pm)
  • Spent the last 6 years darting between these 3 each weekend. I'd say Subby is the place to see if you're from out of town and haven't been before. Berkeley is cool also but save it for another trip if you can only do one or the other. As someone else suggested, I'd say Max's bar (upstairs from la cheetah) is the best bar to pre drink in for Subby atmosphere-wise or there's the Crystal Palace spoons right beside subby if price is your main concern. You're unlucky to be coming now, a lot of the good afters have shut in the past couple of years but if you are looking for one, guys usually come by the subby smoking area close to close to pass out the cards if there is anything happening. If there's anything else you need to know feel free to DM me. by end_transmission_ (Tue 21st Jan 2020 8:58am)
  • You have a choice of parks; 20-25 minutes to Rouken Glen, 25-30 minutes from Linn Park, Pollok park too (unsure how long a walk it is there but less than 45 mins I'd guess). by end_transmission_ (Sun 17th May 2020 9:45am)
  • Seen some kingfishers along the Cart in Linn Park a month or so back, beautiful wee things by end_transmission_ (Mon 25th May 2020 10:56am)
  • Same herons been in almost that exact spot every time I've passed in the last fortnight, wonder what makes it such an irresistible spot by end_transmission_ (Mon 25th May 2020 5:49pm)
  • Screamin weans on trampolines here. Before lockdown: 1 trampoline on our street, never used. Since lockdown: 4/5 trampolines between our street and the one backing onto us, used daily from around 7am to 8pm, just constant ever-so-slightly annoying distant screams and spring noises. That said, can't imagine how hard it is on families with kids right now; being inside all day and trynna work around them; so fair play it's a decent way to tire them out by end_transmission_ (Wed 27th May 2020 9:44am)
  • Well they sound like a bell-end. However, I have always thought that lockdown would be the perfect opportunity to master the vuvuzela... by end_transmission_ (Wed 27th May 2020 2:45pm)
  • I'd honestly be tempted for 1 piece of litter = 1 half day community service litter picking. Hit people where it hurts, making them waste holiday days from their work. by end_transmission_ (Sat 6th Jun 2020 12:01pm)
  • Just bought my first car in years the other day so trying to get the hang of driving again. Anyone know good areas for practising within touching distance of the southside? Specifically looking for places I could maybe get up to above 30/40mph a bit before attempting motorway driving again. by end_transmission_ (Tue 23rd Jun 2020 9:47am)
  • Actually been going round there and Newlands the past few days for exactly that reason! by end_transmission_ (Tue 23rd Jun 2020 10:49am)
  • See I was trying to avoid this cause of the virus (and general stinginess) but I suppose I should listen to reason and just book some motorway lessons, I suppose it would be better than yeetin myself into the barriers at 70mph... by end_transmission_ (Tue 23rd Jun 2020 10:48am)
  • To be fair, have read a few times recently that experts reckon lockdown is gonna lead to further radicalisation of people cause they'll be even more trapped in echo chambers with little distraction by end_transmission_ (Fri 26th Jun 2020 2:30pm)
  • He's been popping up on this and a few other boards for a while now and honestly I'm still unable to tell if his patters actually that honkin or if it's all a very convincing troll by end_transmission_ (Sun 28th Jun 2020 6:02pm)
  • Worryingly, I'm not so sure. Growing up, we were taught in school all the things like "racism bad", "homophobia bad" but now as an adult, it seems the same people who taught me those values don't actually practice them. Working in the local, I've seen my old (left-wing) school teachers, drunk, complaining about "immigrants ruining the country". Aunts and uncles who I once respected complaining about gays "needing to be so in your face" when they see two men holding hands. Even my parents, complaining about how "black people already are equal in the law, what are they complaining about?" whilst watching the news. It's actually terrifying to see. by end_transmission_ (Mon 29th Jun 2020 10:16am)
  • True enough but even if it is a minority, its nowhere near the tiny-but-vocal minority we pretend it to be. If 1 out of those 4 guys is a homophobe that's still a startling number of homophobes in a country of 5 million by end_transmission_ (Mon 29th Jun 2020 11:18am)
  • There was a drowning there yesterday I believe, maybe related to that by end_transmission_ (Thu 2nd Jul 2020 9:15pm)
  • Within 15 minutes drive of the hospital is a pretty huge radius bud, you've got everything from Shawlands to Renfrew in the south but also large chunks of North Glasgow cause of the Clyde tunnel so it's gonna be unlikely anyone's gonna have in-depth knowledge of the whole area. Might want to come back once you have a better idea where she'll be. What I will say is the standard advice of avoiding pubs with no windows or barred windows, and depending on the day avoid pubs with prevalent Union Jacks/Tricolours due to (very occasional) football violence. Also, from experience working in bars for 6 years, It's wise to keep in mind that wherever there is drink there is a risk of fighting; Glasgow's no better or worse than any other UK city and no individual pub is ever completely safe. by end_transmission_ (Sat 4th Jul 2020 4:30pm)
  • If she can get a good place at a fair price, Shawlands would definitely be a good shout for someone from outside Glasgow, lots of good bars along Pollokshaws Road/Kilmarnock Road, wouldn't say any are necessarily risky bars to be around either. Can be a little dear but. by end_transmission_ (Sat 4th Jul 2020 4:54pm)
  • Sssshhhhh - if we aren't careful and keep telling people how nice it is round here the house prices will go up for locals and the Smiddy will go all hipster and start selling exclusively craft ales by end_transmission_ (Sat 4th Jul 2020 11:30pm)
  • Sound like a miserable bastard but cutting the people I'm friends with to a reasonable size. 6 month ago I had a lot of individual friends or small groups of friends who didn't really know each other and felt like I was always meeting folks for catch-up drinks but never to just enjoy ourselves. Lockdown started, I moved home from abroad and I realised that I wasn't going to sustain all those friendships, but that that's okay. I have weekly group calls with my three best friends, a few calls a week with my girlfriend and her sister and other than that I'm kinda cool with just being forgotten about and doing my own thing the rest of the time, not spending half my life on WhatsApp. by end_transmission_ (Sun 5th Jul 2020 12:16am)
  • A Glasgow institution, might not get to go as much as I did during Uni anymore but if we lose this to Covid I'll be absolutely heartbroken. by end_transmission_ (Tue 7th Jul 2020 11:23am)
  • looks like they've got overdue accounts of some kind, wouldn't be shocked if it was maybe just accidentally overlooked considering the bugger year the manager's must have had with never ending legal battles with Wetherspoons/GCC. by end_transmission_ (Tue 7th Jul 2020 2:31pm)
  • Ex lived there so I'd stay over quite often a few years back. They're good flats but they have their problems. Definitely at least a couple brothels in her corridor and my dealer at the time (clean now woot woo) had a drop house there as did several others. The electronic locking absolutely does not work, my ex's door code wouldn't work from day1 but didn't take us long to be told by another resident that if you typed in "1234" it was a reset code and all the doors unlocked. (That's not the actual number but it *was* that simple, kinda thing a kid would guess) Other friends who moved into the building since said they regularly found needles in the stairs/heard loud all night parties and one time found a student girl OD'd on coke in the corridor and had to carry her inside their flat and ring an ambulance. Think they only stayed another month after that. This was all 3/4 years back though, coulda improved since then. by end_transmission_ (Sun 12th Jul 2020 4:07pm)
  • Seriously, what's up with GT comments sections? Always filled with wee knuckle dragging hard men acts, and absolutely no moderation from the paper itself by end_transmission_ (Mon 13th Jul 2020 10:47am)
  • Can believe it. Mind one time when there was a video of a white van man shouting abuse at some asylum seekers playing volleyball, whole comments section was absolutely vile racism and the only comments getting removed were from the minority defending the poor sods' right to be out enjoying the sun. by end_transmission_ (Mon 13th Jul 2020 1:37pm)
  • Yeah we need a sticky at this point. by end_transmission_ (Sun 19th Jul 2020 10:42am)
  • Pollok park, just get train to Pollokshaws West and it's a 5 minute walk to the fields with cows in them (take the Riverside path, they're just after the cricket club and you can get up close) by end_transmission_ (Sun 19th Jul 2020 10:41am)
  • Oh, honestly I have no idea. Haven't left the southside in best bit of 5 months and when I do go out I just walk places by end_transmission_ (Sun 19th Jul 2020 11:02am)
  • Armstrongs isn't the nicest bar but think it's the closest to a proper local in that neck of the woods and the regulars I know are all good guys by end_transmission_ (Wed 22nd Jul 2020 11:37am)
  • Aye, couldn't agree more. My running theory is that when you're drinking 4 pints a day, every day, cost becomes enough of a driving factor that dives become your best option for established groups of drinking buddies and then they gradually draw in more and more soundbregulars around them by end_transmission_ (Wed 22nd Jul 2020 11:48am)

An absolute gent who is sorely missed. by end_transmission_ (Fri 31st Jul 2020 9:03am)
  • It's amazing the fragility of redditors compared with average scot; one minute you're making a wee joke about some inane subject, the next you're watching every post you've ever made get 15 new downvotes. Hard to imagine how they manage to cope with the daily patter of the real world without dishing out karma to massage their egos by end_transmission_ (Fri 31st Jul 2020 9:13am)
  • Aye, it's a combination of Reddit having a very particular demographic that a lot of users will fit into (young, liberal, bit geeky etc) as well as the karma system encouraging people to say things pleasing to the group. Inevitably people just start expressing only the opinions people will agree with - case and point "unpopular opinion" subreddits only posting popular opinions. Love it or loathe it, the anonymity was one thing that 4chan did well in some respect -especially on the smaller boards. You could express an unpopular opinion and, aye, people might have got upset with you, but if you posted again in the future there was no way of *knowing* it was you, meaning each individual post or comment was judged on its own merit to the reader in some extent. by end_transmission_ (Fri 31st Jul 2020 3:33pm)
  • Scottish football finally returns today, and not a moment too soon. Been so odd missing the regular trip to the pub/bookies each week and there were only so many YouTube marble races one man could watch over lockdown ... by end_transmission_ (Sat 1st Aug 2020 9:56am)

  • Was a few years back now but I'm sure my friend and I needed to give NAT Insurance for viewing a flat from one agency, suppose it's just some companies' policy. This was probably before GDPR rules were so tight though so could be different now on whether that's allowed. by end_transmission_ (Mon 10th Aug 2020 12:32pm)
  • Whilst yeah a lot of stuff has been removed, a lot of it is just inane boring shite, kinda think the mods are justified for removing "they're at it again, not wearing masks!" and "can I use a train" like cmon do these really need individual threads? Wee 2 sentence rants or questions could go in the steamie stickies and save us scrolling through endless dross by end_transmission_ (Mon 10th Aug 2020 12:40pm)

  • Girlfriend's neighbour came up the stairs a week ago to inform her the rats in the garden had reached the 1st floor. She's on the second floor and had heard no mention of any rats until now. Anyway, of course next time am round I get sent out to put out the binbag and within 2 minutes seen at least 2/3 rats or very large mice in the back garden. And that's how my plans for next weekend have gone from getting onnit with my pal to cementing up rat holes in the garden ... oh the joys. by end_transmission_ (Sun 23rd Aug 2020 10:31pm)
  • Not having a go right, but cmon, Shawlands is arguably one of the best connected areas of the city. You have Cathcart circle at one end, Crossmyloof at the other, frequent 38s, 57s, and stagecoach 4s, plus you're not out with cycling distance of the centre. I agree that people should make an effort to reduce their car use, but it's not an option for folk living in a lot of areas of the city until we either expand the subway or make buses a whole lot faster and more frequent along less major routes. by end_transmission_ (Sat 29th Aug 2020 9:15am)

  • Usually an SNP supporter but this wheres the logic in this? I can't stay at my girlfriend's flat, but I can go into her work alongside 60 drunk people who are refusing to follow the rules? Unless I'm a key worker I couldn't leave my kids to be looked after by their grandparents, but I can leave them to be looked after by someone else's at a nursery or school? by end_transmission_ (Tue 1st Sep 2020 6:46pm)
  • I can 100% understand if that's the case... But show me the evidence Nicola. We've enjoyed a relative level of transparency so far in the responses to Covid, so if they're finding that say 70% of their positive tests can be traced to houses and 20% to pubs, then show me that statistic. As it stands it seems to me they're doing anything they can to protect employers and the economy - even if that's at the expense of working class employees being put at risk when all the infected knobheads who've been having parties start flocking to the pubs instead. by end_transmission_ (Tue 1st Sep 2020 7:07pm)

  • As the current number 1 manager in the r/ScottishFootball fantasy league, I'd just like take this opportunity to thank the fans, the back room staff, and most of all, the bitter old firm fans who early on refused to sign players from the "wrong side" of the divide. I really couldn't have achieved these heights without each and every one of you, and I look forward to returning to tenth place by the end of today. by end_transmission_ (Sun 13th Sep 2020 8:30am)

  • Most likely. Never quite got the whole "dropping kids off at the gates" kinda thing though when really most schools are either in walking distance for kids or offer school buses. Anyway, with our main office only allowed 1/8th of its usual staff I've been changed from a 15 minute train journey to a 45 minute drive each way and I am wholly unimpressed... Though suppose I should grateful to still have a job! by end_transmission_ (Fri 18th Sep 2020 4:25pm)

  • Question: should Glasgow Uni be either fined or forced to expel their idiotic students having plague parties? Comparing with the idiots at Aberdeen/Celtic it seems it's one rule for a 20 year old working class footballer and another for a 20 year old middle/upper class student if they don't. Just looking for a debate here, not really got an opinion either way myself but the thought crossed my mind reading the news over breakfast. by end_transmission_ (Thu 24th Sep 2020 7:53am)
  • Aye I think expulsion would be harsh but some sort of punishment feels in order whether it's to the uni or to the people in halls who were hosting the parties. Considering it's a standing order she's had set up sending that money I have no idea how it's gotten lost all this time as it's definitely been coming out her account and even they admit they received the £100 at the end of last month. Even if I took some holidays days, I can't go a hike, can't go abroad and can't see my friends so what's the point? I don't object to the restrictions at all, they're there to protect folks like my parents, but it's getting almost impossible to handle the boredom now and when the highlight of your week is the 2-3 hours of contact you get with your boss, you know there's a problem. by end_transmission_ (Wed 4th Nov 2020 9:13am)
  • A kind offer but I'm actually off viewing some flats tonight so at least there's that to look forward to! by end_transmission_ (Wed 4th Nov 2020 12:58pm)
  • Yeah it's a stress, rang up about a flat last week, 1 hour after the advert had been put up, to book a viewing and the only appointment they could offer me was today. When I checked back last night, it's now going to closing date Friday... Makes it feel a bit pointless going to view it but at this point even getting to see a few places in my price range and think about what kinda compromises I'm willing to make or what areas I'd be happy in will be better than nothing. So yeah, while no doubt in a month or two I'll be just as burnt out with the house hunt, right now it's new and interesting enough that it's more of an escape than a burden! How about you, have you been to see much? by end_transmission_ (Wed 4th Nov 2020 1:59pm)
  • I've always bought/sold my cars privately through Facebook, Gumtree and Autotrader. Think Autotrader is best generally because it fosters a more professional marketplace, usually gives more information and has filter options but also tends to be a bit more expensive. Can easily check the MOT history if you Google it and that'll give you a fair idea what kind of things to look out for when inspecting. The cartalkUK subreddit should have a thread on any problems specific to certain models. When looking at any car in the UK, age is important particularly on some models if they're prone to rust but I'd say that a full service history (FSH) is always the biggest draw for me to any car as it suggests it's been well looked after. I know Autotrader allows this as a filter and it's worth considering if buying an older second hand car. by end_transmission_ (Thu 5th Nov 2020 10:04am)

Mind a few months ago when business lunches got an exemption from the policy on multiple households and suddenly every cunt was booking conference rooms in hotels to get onnit with their pals? I agree its shite that regular folk can't have a civilised drink with a meal but really it's the fault of the same minority of bams with alcohol problems who got drinking in public, drinking at football, and drinking on trains banned. by end_transmission_ (Tue 17th Nov 2020 1:55pm)

  • Did my MEng there. Classes I remember being good were: Electrical Power Systems - taught by EEE professor but counted as Mechanical credits. Was at maybe a 2nd year level since it was a conversion course. Air Pollution - Civil Engineering department (think you're allowed 20 credits a semester from other departments) but it was literally making 2 posters for final grade, everyone got As. Nuclear power systems - All coursework based, quite interesting, easy to get a good score. Energy Policy - Name might be a little different but it was taught by Joseph Clarke, was a really good overview of the challenges to achieving Net Zero, exam was easy and learning was very good prep for interviews if you're going into that sector. Ones to avoid: Design Management from DMEM. Was EXTREMELY popular with erasmus students, who were clearly in Glasgow to party and not work. Literally everyone I knew from the course had problems with their groups with team members disappearing mid semester, committing plagiarism for group submissions, generally failing to work in a team. by end_transmission_ (Fri 20th Nov 2020 8:33am)
  • Sorry I only did 60 credits of classes that year, the rest was all project work so I don't know too much about the other classes. I heard financial engineering was a good class but kept people quite busy with deadlines, no idea what the grades were like. Risk management was similar. Avoid Engineering plasticity, heard that ruined some people's averages. That's all I know sorry, best of luck and hope you enjoy the course. by end_transmission_ (Fri 20th Nov 2020 6:50pm)

  • I agree its stupid that the bits along the south bank of the river never get considered "southside". Growing up here we kinda interpreted it as was anything east of the M77 or west of Aikenhead road. My best bet for why the riverbank areas aren't thought of as southside is cause there used to be a pretty strong sense of community in them with people living, working and socialising in the same small area. Meanwhile areas like Pollokshields, Queens Park, Cathcart, Newlands were more residential so people living there and to travel out their immediate area for work and recreation. by end_transmission_ (Fri 4th Dec 2020 10:06am)
  • Statistically, southside is about 40% of the city population. On top of that, half the people round here don't know what to call their specific area cause there's not well defined borders between say Queen's Park, Strathbungo and Govanhill, so it's easier to just say "Southside" - in other parts of the city there might be more defined boundaries. by end_transmission_ (Fri 4th Dec 2020 10:22am)

  • No experience with it as a customer but worked with some clients who've been designing them into new developments. AFAIK the running costs are quite comparable to gas/electric heating once you factor in the cost of insuring, maintaining and replacing your boiler across its lifespan. Other benefit is if something does break you aren't responsible for arranging repairs. Cons are that it might impact resale value on the home just now, but that'll likely change in the next 5-10 years as the UK is committed to no new gas grid connections by 2025 and district heat will likely prove cheaper than electric heat. Most do a regular night out each week so will get you out socialising once covids over. • Steamers work well but I didn't want to risk damaging the plaster and I've had some nasty scalds off them in the past. I used a chemical stripper called Zinsser Dif with a garden sprayer to dissolve the paste underneath then scraped it off in sheets with a paint scraper. Can get the Dif for £9 a bottle at Screwfix and should get 1 or 2 rooms done per bottle. Tips would be: •scrape off as many of the big chips as you can before soaking the walls, will help the chemicals soak through to bottom layer. •Score the wall as much you can without going through to plaster before soaking, either with a Stanley knife or tool like a Zinsser paper tiger (£12ish from Screwfix) •Bottle says 2 coats, I'd say do minimum 3 and then leave it at least an hour before starting stripping. Scraping gets quicker the longer you leave it on. •once scraping if it dries out, sponge + soap water should help redissolve anything that's not shifting so easily. ...Jeez who knew I'd get so excited over removing wallpaper by end_transmission_ (Mon 22nd Feb 2021 1:26pm)

Anyone got the console already and able to recommend a couple games to get? • Didn't know a hitman 3 had came out, that changes everything. Blood money was always one of my top 5 games. Reading reviews online I'd seen that AC has switched from "stealth" to RPG kinda thing apparently, is the combat still alright? Can't imagine it working so well as an elder Scrolls kinda thing And aye, folk keep saying about PS plus, sounds like it's just Sony's (non charitable) version of the humble bundle but judging that that's the only way I've bought a game in the past 5 years probably a good bet haha by end_transmission_ (Wed 17th Mar 2021 12:39pm)

  • If you ask me, adults' bikes should need registration plates. Why a car driver can be held accountable for dangerous driving after the fact but cyclists can't be is beyond me. by end_transmission_ (Thu 18th Mar 2021 8:14am)
  • Doesn't have to be the same size as a car registration plate, heck doesn't even have to be a registration plate per se, just some way of identifying the increasing numbers of cyclists going two abreast down the road and treating red lights as optional. Would also help with the bike thefts we've been seeing if every bike was instantly identifiable, I know some have serial numbers right now but bit harder to make that out on gumtree or wherever they're being fenced. by end_transmission_ (Thu 18th Mar 2021 8:34am)
  • Nope I don't think they need taxed, they're a greener way to travel and I cycle for most local journeys myself. The issue I see when driving though is that if I'm on an emergency call out in a 2 tonne fully loaded van and I get stuck behind a flock of cyclists going two abreast on a country road, how am I reasonably meant to overtake? Equally, had it happen that as I'm approaching a T junction I've had cyclists think they can "nip through" the lights with me slowing down to suit them, again not always an easy feat with tools and replacement parts on board the van. Respectful cyclists are no issue at all but as with anything the minority are making things worse for everyone. Yes I'm more dangerous to them than they are to me but that's not an excuse to have no accountability on one side. by end_transmission_ (Thu 18th Mar 2021 8:44am)
  • From cycling weekly: >The current wording in the Highway Code under rule 66, says “you should never ride more than two abreast, and ride in single file on narrow or busy roads and when riding round bends,” On a wide roads with plenty space to overtake it's not an issue but it's a problem on country roads and B roads. by end_transmission_ (Thu 18th Mar 2021 8:57am)
  • Accountability improves behaviour. Behaviour improves safety. by end_transmission_ (Thu 18th Mar 2021 11:53am)
  • The "getting out of hand" myth gets on my tits so much. Compare the behaviour around football now to that of 20 years ago and it's so much more tame than it was. The only difference we have now is the vocal 50% who don't like football posting online about it thinking that it makes them interesting. Its the middle-class adult's "I'm not like the other girls" trope. by end_transmission_ (Mon 22nd Mar 2021 9:49am)

  • Relating to the today in Scottish History segment: I've actually managed to work out at Longannet a few times in the past year or two with the demolition and it's been a very cool place to see. Very atmospheric. The scale of it is like nothing else I've worked on up here, amazing to think how many men must have worked there in its hay day between the mine, the railyard and the power plant. As glad as I am to see us move away from coal as a nation, it's sad to see these kind of old giants being demolished and taken for scrap when you think about how important they were within their communities. Wind, Solar and Gas can replace the generation capacity of coal but never the labour demand. by end_transmission_ (Mon 29th Mar 2021 10:39am)

  • After my mystery coal cellar last week, last night I discovered a mystery electric meter behind some old boxes in my living room cupboard. Cable comes in to a regular switch on the wall, goes into the meter and then off to god knows where through the ceiling. Switch was left in the off position, tried turning it on and the meter started spinning, turned it back off and it stopped dead. Far as I can tell all my electrics are working and my bills are done through the other meter so guess I just leave it? Just seems off that it was drawing current... by end_transmission_ (Wed 31st Mar 2021 11:07am)

I did work in ABC a bit in my teens but so knew the backroom layout quite well and from what I was told by stadf the first bit of the building they realised was on fire was the back rooms where it touched up against art school. Celtic fans would 100% have done this is if it was 10iar and we wouldn't call that intimidating so not really fair to say it about Rangers fans wanting to celebrate their teams good season. by end_transmission_ (Mon 10th May 2021 11:25am)

Gotta start practising my uncle patter though, classics such as "What's that" whilst pointing to their chest before flicking their nose. Or "I'm on a seafood diet, I see food, I eat it." All the mild bullying his/her father inflicted on me as the youngest child will be returned threefold and I cannot wait. by end_transmission_ (Mon 10th May 2021 11:34am)

But you can't tar all rangers fans who want to celebrate their season with the same brush as the minority who attend orange walks/fascist rallies etc. Its this kind of "All bears are fascists" or "All Celts are terrorist sympathisers" bullshit that fosters more division and more problems in the long run. by end_transmission_ (Mon 10th May 2021 11:53am)

If we're taking tests, wearing our masks in public, sitting apart from people whenever possible, disinfecting our hands is some rule-breaking acceptable? • >bUt fOoTbAlL bAd... I think it's just that Reddit attracts people with niche interests, who maybe didn't feel accepted when they were young, and who then made the "popular football kids" into a strawman for the problems with society at large that they've ended up holding onto into adult life. No doubt there's issues with some football fans (George Square, Fence throwers etc) but the problems overstated when you look at the numbers of how many people actually watch, play or follow the game Vs the number causing disruption. by end_transmission_ (Thu 27th May 2021 9:37am)
  • This is what gets me too, we know fine well that "Glasgow" doesn't end at the border of GCC, and because most the hospitality, things to do and jobs are here we'll continually be reinfected from outside no matter what. I'm not shifting the blame off folk round here entirely but it's like they haven't even considered that being the hub city for most of the west/central belt is probably going to have a disproportionately negative effect on our numbers right up until the last breath of the pandemic. by end_transmission_ (Fri 28th May 2021 1:14pm)

  • All 3 of the areas you mentioned would suit your needs well I reckon; Dennistoun would be best for getting to Merchant City quickly and is a good area for young professionals. West end is very expensive by Glasgow standards but does have a lot going on. Strathbungo is also nice, might cost more than Dennistoun but, and be warned that estate agents have a pretty loose definition of it as an area so always view a flat and it's surroundings at day and night before taking it just in case by end_transmission_ (Mon 31st May 2021 11:11am)

  • Usually not best naming specific spots online for fear they get ruined by irresponsible wee shits with disposable barbecues but if you're just looking for regions/general areas accessible by public transport: Train to Tyndrum/Ardlui/Crianlarich/Bridge of Orchy (check if you need camping permits first) There's a citilink bus that goes up the A82, presumably the Fort William one, I passed it dropping off a pack of campers near Glen Orchy at the weekend so ask the driver and he might do you a solid. Dumfries forest park near Stinchar Bridge is a popular area too. Think there is a bus but no idea where it leaves from. Another couple of tips for finding specific spots in the areas you're considering: •Buy an OS Map, will let you see how steep the ground is better than Google maps etc •Check the website "Geograph", it will show you photos taken in the areas you're looking at so you can judge whether it's suitable for you by end_transmission_ (Wed 2nd Jun 2021 11:47am)
  • Cars getting to that age where its uneconomical to repair. Never had a brand new car before but decided since I've now got my own place that I might as well consider an electric. **£28,000 for a smaller Honda than the one I have now and with a range of only 137miles.** Fuck me. Knew they were expensive but how the hell is 137 miles range good enough for anyone who doesn't do just local journeys? Even Glasgow to Aberdeen would require at least 1 charging stop at that rate! by end_transmission_ (Thu 3rd Jun 2021 9:47am)
  • Aye, after looking at a few more it seems to be at the worse end of the range:price spectrum. I'll take a look at the Hyundai cheers, seems a good fit for what I need by end_transmission_ (Thu 3rd Jun 2021 10:10am)
  • Sounds better suited to me then aye. My problem is most the time I use the car for just short journeys to do the big shop or visit family but with my work I'm driving anywhere from Gretna to Fife a few times time a fortnight so need a fair bit of range for that. by end_transmission_ (Thu 3rd Jun 2021 12:14pm)
  • Right now? Think you're pretty much fucked unless you have private parking. Doubt DNOs would be able to install a new metered connection like that on public pathways. A huge number of new charging places are getting put in as part of the green recovery so that'll start changing soon though, so in five years it's not that out there to think most streets with tennements will have some option for charging. by end_transmission_ (Thu 3rd Jun 2021 12:18pm)
  • Company cars aren't given to trainees with us sadly, but assuming I get a permanent contract with the department I want in a year's time I'd be eligible to apply for *some* funding. • Can't quite say why it's not so widely used yet, but Strathclyde University have DH, as do two council Schemes I'm aware of: Hillpark in the southside (using air source heat pumps, very high COSP) and West Whitlawburn in Cambuslang (Woodchip biomass). Did some enabling works for another DH scheme down in Wales in September time, the local council there were apprehensive about the cost of digging up and reinstating all the local roads to install the piping but came round because the area was off-gas and they wanted to force residents away from coal/oil heating. by end_transmission_ (Tue 8th Jun 2021 9:10am)

  • Good on yous for protesting responsibly and for being considerate of factors like the vaccination centre. Hope the council listen to your concerns now. by end_transmission_ (Wed 9th Jun 2021 11:15am)
  • It's only 12,000 fans in the stadium for each game and they'll be around Mount Florida not the city centre. The Fanzone at Glasgow Green will be busy most days but it people will probably be staggered going in and out. Pubs will be packed for any game involving Scotland, particularly the one on the 18th against England. by end_transmission_ (Wed 9th Jun 2021 12:02pm)
  • Wasn't saying "don't cause any disruption" was just saying it's good they were being considerate of external factors like the vaccine centre. By taking up bus lanes they'll disrupt public transport whilst allowing emergency vehicles to travel through the city freely and by avoiding the vaccine centres they won't cause a spike in missed appointments. Protest isn't an all-or-nothing endeavour, you can still protest and be heard without causing havoc by blocking people from getting vaccines or shutting down the Kingston bridge. by end_transmission_ (Wed 9th Jun 2021 1:03pm)

  • To be honest, a lot of people just group any Irish music thats vaguely patriotic or political as rebel music. Christy Moore might sing political songs (Viva la quinte brigada) or songs which tell stories of their oppression (Fields of Athenrye, Back home in Derry) but he’s hardly a balaclava wearing provo. Wolfe Tones, Eire Og, Charlie and the Bhoys are the ones to be avoiding if you want to avoid upset. People who are offended by the Dubliners, Luke Kelly or even Christy Moore are more than likely just going to be offended by anything they perceive as Irish/Catholic. by end_transmission_ (Thu 10th Jun 2021 11:43am)

  • Assuming you’re young, anywhere south of the m74, west of Aikenhead road, east of Pollok Park and north of Merrylee Road. Keeps you within walking distance of pubs and public transport, nowhere too posh, nowhere too rough, nowhere too suburban. If youre looking at Govanhill, Crosshill or what estate agents call “Strathbungo” view the flat at day and at night before deciding. by end_transmission_ (Fri 11th Jun 2021 10:18am)
  • If you can, somewhere walking distance of queens park is what you want then, its the hub for most the pubs, restaurants etc. Mount Florida is a bit more affordable if Shawlands/Battlefield are too expensive by end_transmission_ (Fri 11th Jun 2021 10:25am)
  • Aye I agree its not nearly so threatening as its made out, but what I have seen with friends is that specific streets in Govanhill have a lot more noise at night from parties or people hanging about that you don’t really see as much during the days. I like Govanhill a lot but, and definitely think a hefty chunk of the shite it gets off people online is just cause its always had a vibrant immigrant population. by end_transmission_ (Fri 11th Jun 2021 12:19pm)

If I was starting again I'd avoid city centre late night bars/clubs and go for a local/old man pub; the hours, the co-workers and the clientele are so much easier to deal with.
