  • HMV also own Fopp so probably not for long there either. by scisteve (Fri 25th Jan 2019 9:47pm)
  • It's fantastic but they close at 8pm or whenever they run out of food, whichever comes first. by scisteve (Mon 28th Jan 2019 5:43pm)
  • I know it's none of my business what other people choose to wear, but it really bugs me seeing guys in shorts in the depths of winter. I just don't get it. by scisteve (Fri 8th Feb 2019 6:13pm)
  • Where are you in Glasgow? That will make a difference. Can I ask why you're leaving Pets n Vets? We've been taking our cats there for years and they've always been so good. by scisteve (Mon 18th Mar 2019 11:27am)
  • What kind of band? We had a ceilidh band at our wedding who were just fantastic. We had a lot of international guests and they all had a great time learning the dances. They went on from 7.30pm to 11pm with a half hour break - and we played a music setlist during the break and after they finished. by scisteve (Wed 20th Mar 2019 8:02am)
  • I've had three bad experiences with It All Started Here, which is a real shame because I really wanted to support a business like that. My go-to now is Grain and Grind. by scisteve (Sat 23rd Mar 2019 11:48pm)
  • Oro in Shawlands were advertising a role in the window on Sunday. by scisteve (Tue 9th Apr 2019 11:15pm)
  • Remnant Kings is attached to Fraser's but is a separate business. You can enter it from inside Fraser's or from the bottom of Buchanan Street. by scisteve (Fri 12th Apr 2019 11:53am)
  • Gordon Street Coffee do it. by scisteve (Tue 16th Apr 2019 8:50pm)
  • Thanks! It was taken on a Google Pixel 3 using the 'night sight' camera mode which allows you to take photos in dim light. And no I'm not staff, I am a member of the Glasgow branch of the British Cactus and Succulent Society - we meet once a month after closing in the Botanics for a talk. We're usually in a building at the back of the cafe but last night we had the talk in the Kibble Palace. The guards let us have a quick wander around the place after the meeting finished. by scisteve (Fri 19th Apr 2019 4:09pm)
  • We meet there for committee meetings too, but most meetings are held in the Hopkirk Building. Which society committee are you referring to? by scisteve (Fri 19th Apr 2019 11:00pm)
  • How though? The date is on your voting card. by scisteve (Mon 27th May 2019 10:19am)
  • Glasgow is my absolute favourite city in the UK. I moved here from Yorkshire 5 years ago and would never willingly leave this place. Yes, of course there are things I don't like about it - the transport is annoying, the city centre can be grimy in parts - but the quality of life is great compared to where I grew up. I've lived in three cities prior to this and didn't particularly care for any of them - Glasgow is a winner for me. My grandmother was originally from here and moved down to Yorkshire in the 1960s - she hated it so much that she never returned and always warned me not to go - but I understand the city has gone through massive changes since then but particularly in the 1980s starting with the Garden Festival. I couldn't imagine living anywhere else. by scisteve (Wed 5th Jun 2019 10:33am)
  • If the worst happems and you don't pass, change instructors immediately. If you're in the southside I highly recommend Mark from Caledonian - after a few weeks of lessons with him I passed. Very thorough teacher. Caledonian also have other drivers in the west and east ends. by scisteve (Fri 28th Jun 2019 4:47pm)
  • Live in Shawlands and manage to get a space every day, maybe not the same space but I can always find one within a minute walk from my front door. by scisteve (Wed 3rd Jul 2019 3:02pm)
  • What are you doing that you have failed multiple attempts? It's practically free to make your own. by scisteve (Tue 23rd Jul 2019 10:47am)
  • Corum are fantastic and keep you up to date every other day or so that your property is on the market. They're also open late nights a few days a week which is great for after work visits. by scisteve (Fri 26th Jul 2019 1:45pm)
  • Where do you actually want to go? From Shawlands there is no subway - your public transport options are limited to Pollokshaws East train station into town (or Shawlands, or Crossmaloof, depending on exactly where you are). It's also a great location for First Bus routes (although they're not exactly everyone's favourite company). by scisteve (Thu 15th Aug 2019 11:05am)
  • Been here 5 years myself and couldn't agree more. by scisteve (Fri 23rd Aug 2019 12:41pm)
  • Silla is by far the best place for Korean food in Glasgow. by scisteve (Fri 23rd Aug 2019 12:40pm)
  • Definitely Cup. by scisteve (Fri 30th Aug 2019 9:37pm)
  • I'm curious, what do you talk about twice a day? My mum is down in Yorkshire and we speak maybe 2-3 times a month. by scisteve (Mon 23rd Sep 2019 1:08pm)
  • Is it though? I'm really confused about what's happening there. The owner told me on their final weekend in early September that it would be closing down the next day - but a couple of weeks ago it still seemed to be open? by scisteve (Mon 21st Oct 2019 10:33pm)
  • From Yorkshire originally, people in my area used lobby to describe the room your front door leads into - no matter how big or small it is. I've had to stop saying it in Scotland because people think I'm being sarcastic or pretentious. by scisteve (Sat 26th Oct 2019 8:34am)
  • I love this guy. Look up his review of Farm Girl in Chelsea if you want a laugh. by scisteve (Sun 3rd Nov 2019 7:41pm)
  • REMOVED Done. Some of the questions were a bit funny though. Like "I eat more junk food on my days off" so if I disagree does that mean you interpret the as I eat it more at work? Also for the list of foods, you've got down low fat dairy products but not regular products. Does low fat include semi skimmed or not? I put no to that question because I don't eat low fat dairy, but I love regular dairy - so how will this be interpreted? by scisteve (Wed 20th Nov 2019 11:46am)
  • Couldn't you just make it? It's incredibly inexpensive compared to buying as it's always overpriced, it's very simple to make, and the only ingredient that might be hard to find is wheat gluten, which you can get online. by scisteve (Wed 4th Dec 2019 6:23pm)
  • I got a response saying I was too late. I don't know how - it was sent within the guidelines. by scisteve (Wed 11th Dec 2019 6:19pm)
  • I lived close to Ibrox Library for a little over a month in October. I was shitting it before I went but it was fine. The worst thing that happened was someone set off a firework in the street. Even game day was fine. by scisteve (Sun 12th Jan 2020 1:03pm)
  • I learnt and passed in an automatic after giving manual a good go. I used Mark from Caledonian - he is amazing. He has a wee automatic Smart car and his methods of teaching use reflection and a little self-teaching outside lessons. He's a little more expensive than most but I found all my lessons very fulfilling and I passed with him after 3 months (having 8 months of lessons in a manual prior). Don't let people detract you from automatic lessons if that's what you want. Automatics now account for 30% of sales and, as someone who drives for a living, you can always get an automatic hire car if you need it. by scisteve (Tue 14th Jan 2020 2:25pm)
  • If they're truly rare, your absolute best bet is eBay. There are no shops I am aware of locally that will give you the true value of your stuff. Remember the whole point of Cex is to resell your items so you're never going be given anywhere near the full value as that cuts into the profit margin. Other than that you're looking at specialised gaming websites and events. Why the reluctance to use eBay? by scisteve (Mon 20th Jan 2020 2:32pm)
  • Edinburgh is absolutely shite for shopping though. Everything is just so spread out and there are just so many people there, especially in summer, and it can genuinely feel claustrophobic at times. A new shopping centre doesn't really change anything for Glasgow, it's injecting some seriously needed life into major east coast retail. by scisteve (Sat 1st Feb 2020 11:05am)
  • Morrisons sell mixed woodland mushrooms and shiitake. They also have dried porcini mushrooms. by scisteve (Sun 23rd Feb 2020 3:37pm)
  • That was me! I'm part of the British Cactus and Succulent Society in Glasgow and I'm regularly in the botanics well after hours. I posted a photo a while ago of inside the Kibble Palace taken around 10pm - is this what you mean? by scisteve (Thu 27th Feb 2020 5:48pm)
  • You're driving to Skye from London? Are you stopping at places on the way? by scisteve (Thu 5th Mar 2020 5:15pm)
  • I've become way more inventive with food recently. Because we're trying to leave the house as little as possible, nothing is going to waste. That and I have more time to cook, too. Some very overripe bananas became a banana bread, made a salad from beetroot tops that would normally go in the bin, some leftover pizza dough became flatbreads, added some leftover carrots to a batch of kimchi I made. I'm really enjoying cooking every day and seeing what I can do with things I would normally toss. by scisteve (Fri 20th Mar 2020 8:16am)
  • That's exactly why I'm making the most of the limited produce we've got. We didn't stockpile, just did a normal shop. by scisteve (Fri 20th Mar 2020 10:56am)
  • Dear Green are still shipping. I just ordered some beans. by scisteve (Mon 30th Mar 2020 12:35am)
  • If you know someone in Shawlands, Shawlands Continental is selling huge vacuums packed 500g bags of it for £3.50. It's incredible, works really well. by scisteve (Fri 1st May 2020 6:58pm)
  • I've signed up and regularly get emails telling me I'm not needed - so I'm baffled. by scisteve (Sun 10th May 2020 5:28pm)
  • Thanks they've got a perfect one! by scisteve (Fri 22nd May 2020 1:14pm)
  • No, sparking red. Like a sparking Shiraz or something. by scisteve (Fri 22nd May 2020 1:13pm)
  • Where does one find a boy to use for this purpose? by scisteve (Wed 10th Jun 2020 4:00pm)
  • I'm led to understand this is a controversial choice, but I really love Armando's pizza on Merryvale Place. by scisteve (Sun 5th Jul 2020 9:21am)
  • I've just discovered Thomson's Coffee Roasters in Giffnock and I can't imagine going anywhere else now. It's great, and you can get 1kg bags. I also like The Good Coffee Cartel in Ibrox, nice guys making decent coffee. Used to use Gordon Street all the time for years but I found it wildly inconsistent - one week it would be packed with flavour and a few weeks later a new bag of the same coffee would be bland. That said, they make smashing takeaway coffee. by scisteve (Tue 21st Jul 2020 12:04am)
  • They're fantastic. We paid for the packing service too and could not believe how quickly they managed to box up our entire flat. They arranged storage for us for a few weeks until our new place was ready. On moving day, they even built our bed back up for us. Great guys too. Would highly, highly recommend. by scisteve (Tue 21st Jul 2020 10:59pm)
  • They do an apple and cinnamon scone which is nice - but nothing mind blowing and not really worth a trip out to Braehead just to pick some up. You could make some of equal quality. by scisteve (Fri 24th Jul 2020 6:11pm)
  • Depends what you want. I lived there for a short time and found it to be extremely boring and far from everything. I heard it’s good for schools etc though. by scisteve (Mon 24th Aug 2020 5:16pm)
  • Mark from Caledonian. He’s one of the more expensive instructors but worth every penny - extremely thorough teacher who places an emphasis on reflection after driving. Helps a lot. You also get homework from him sometimes! by scisteve (Mon 7th Sep 2020 10:50pm)
  • Chef John is amazing, I love him. by scisteve (Fri 11th Sep 2020 12:45pm)
  • I hate to say this because the service is good, but the price was always expensive and has recently gone up even more. by scisteve (Thu 17th Sep 2020 11:19am)
  • You could try Seewoo, I’ve had good luck there with both Japanese and Korean products. If no luck there then try Chung Ying about a 5 minute drive down the road near the Cally - also pretty good. You are probably better looking online though due to the pandemic - try japancentre.com by scisteve (Tue 5th Jan 2021 11:12pm)
  • I walk through that park sometimes and think it might be nice to pick up a warm hot chocolate from them on colder days - then I see the queue. It’s never less than 10 people deep at lunchtime and they’re snaking around the busy over-capacity seating area standing very close to them. It’s nuts. This is definitely the best thing to do - might try one of their deliveries. by scisteve (Mon 11th Jan 2021 11:32pm)
  • That is really dodgy because of the potential for card cloning. Strange too as the wee handheld wireless card readers are ubiquitous these days. by scisteve (Thu 14th Jan 2021 9:07am)
  • Their four seasons pizza is one of my favourites. by scisteve (Fri 5th Feb 2021 11:23pm)
  • Several Sainsbury’s across the city operate a canister exchange where you bring your old ones back and get £10 off a new one. There’s a map on the Soda Stream website. by scisteve (Thu 18th Mar 2021 11:10pm)
  • Not a book, but there’s a fantastic BBC podcast series about the Scottish Witch Trials available on most podcast streaming services: https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p07rn41g by scisteve (Tue 30th Mar 2021 12:29pm)
  • I’d really love to join you if you’re ever in south side! by scisteve (Sat 3rd Apr 2021 7:50pm)
  • I’m in Newlands. Newlands itself is clean but Shawlands is awful for rubbish. Have you done Shawlands before? by scisteve (Sat 3rd Apr 2021 9:13pm)
  • If you enjoy a sometimes confusing system of mass roundabouts then sure. by scisteve (Mon 19th Apr 2021 1:58pm)
  • The big one near Auldhouse Retail Park is awful. It’s constantly backed up at rush hour with cars sat on the actual roundabout, and until it finally had a paint job last year it was a fucking nightmare to navigate too. by scisteve (Wed 28th Apr 2021 11:31pm)
  • Exactly the same scenario with me. Got an email back a couple weeks ago saying they’d investigate but nothing since. In the end I just called the vaccine helpline and the lady I spoke to got me a vaccination appointment sorted for next week. Would recommend calling. by scisteve (Tue 18th May 2021 11:29pm)
  • I cannot recommend Warren Capaldi enough - really lovely guy and a great electrician. Has done three jobs for us over the past year and always do a high standard https://www.mybuilder.com/profile/view/warren_capaldi by scisteve (Sat 26th Jun 2021 7:08pm)

  • Gordon Street Coffee in Central Station does both regular and veggie haggis breakfast rolls. by scisteve (Sun 22nd Aug 2021 12:12pm)
  • Agree with Good Coffee Cartel, but had an awful experience in It All Started Here a couple of years ago and haven’t been back since. Wouldn’t recommend at all. by scisteve (Thu 26th Aug 2021 11:03pm)
  • Well it was developed in Glasgow. by scisteve (Sat 4th Sep 2021 11:22am)
  • It’s really wrong to me that they are allowed to provide confidential personal information to a private company. by scisteve (Sun 5th Sep 2021 11:57am)
  • Matthews is just 3 min drive down the road and has become my go-to since Seewoo started to go downhill a bit. It’s a real shame as Seewoo was one of my favourite shops for years. by scisteve (Tue 7th Sep 2021 5:21pm)
  • What’s wrong with Six by Nico? We had a great time there just before the pandemic last year, food was lovely and service was great. by scisteve (Tue 14th Sep 2021 4:00pm)
  • Totally off topic but is your username based on the spooky ghost in a jail cell video from the late 2000s? by scisteve (Sat 18th Sep 2021 5:24pm)
  • They said that they are struggling due to the high cost of import from East Asian countries now since brexit occurred. Matthews Foods just off Garscube Road is much better stocked and only a 3 minute drive from Seewoo. by scisteve (Sat 25th Sep 2021 6:43pm)
  • We discovered over the weekend that the first person to own our house was a German musician and conductor who played at major events and venues across the U.K, including Buckingham Palace and the now long gone Hamilton House, as well as doing contemporary (for the age) music for university formal ball events. He was also the lead conductor at the Hillhead Cinema back in the silent movie days (now Hillhead Book Club). We’ve managed to track down some gramophone records from the 1910s which recorded him and his orchestra playing some traditional Scottish ballads and we’re going to display them on the walls in our house. by scisteve (Mon 4th Oct 2021 11:53am)
  • Morning everyone. A friend and I have started a video game RPG podcast and are trying to spread the word. If you’re into your RPGs then please consider giving us a listen - we’re called Mirth and Magic, and we’re on all major platforms. • Much appreciated! I see you’re an FFXIV fan too - spoiler alert, that’s my #10 fav RPG on the list. No longer play but may go back for Endwalker. by scisteve (Thu 7th Oct 2021 10:00am)
  • Oh god, I had a panic attack in Geek Retreat around 2015. I went in for the first time as I heard they sold board games, and it was so claustrophobic and the smell of BO was actually overpowering - I am not exaggerating I swear. That with no windows and it being busy with some card game or other happening made me just lose it and I had an overwhelming urge to get out of there. It took a good 30 min to recover outside and I never had another panic attack again in my puff. by scisteve (Thu 7th Oct 2021 5:08pm)
  • Is it still really busy there on a Saturday? Haven’t been for nearly two years but used to love their stuff. by scisteve (Sat 9th Oct 2021 12:06pm)
  • I love classical music but I’ve never been to a single event- I’d love to though! by scisteve (Sun 24th Oct 2021 2:25pm)

  • Been about a month since I last posted this so hope it’s ok! • Thanks a lot!! Really appreciate that. Well, I’m from Yorkshire but lived here 8 years - grandma was from here but moved to Yorkshire in the 60s, and here I am moved back! My friend is southern English but lives in the north of England. by scisteve (Wed 3rd Nov 2021 10:51am)
  • Do we have a Baynes in Glasgow now? by scisteve (Sat 6th Nov 2021 4:58pm)
  • Morning all. I have the day off and I’m inexplicably already awake. That is all. Have a good one. by scisteve (Fri 26th Nov 2021 7:29am)
  • Shawlands Continental sell Crystal too. by scisteve (Sun 5th Dec 2021 12:45am)
  • Will you have collard greens and fried green tomatoes? Fried catfish? I’m in, if so. by scisteve (Sun 5th Dec 2021 11:43pm)
  • I love Catflap - we got our two boys from them and I’ve done a lot of fundraising and stuff for them since. Run by lovely people too. by scisteve (Sat 15th Jan 2022 3:52pm)
  • Hey, I took automatic lessons with Mark Allan from Caledonian. He’s really good - super chill and includes reflection and theory to his driving lessons. He has a dedicated car for automatic driving (it was a Smart car when I was learning three years ago). I had failed my test multiple times with another instructor who did very little to put my nerves at rest - I got rid of him and after 6 weeks with Mark I passed on my first attempt. by scisteve (Mon 17th Jan 2022 3:18pm)
  • Just fill in the form [here](https://www.caledonianldt.com/contact-us/) - I should say these are not the cheapest driving lessons you will find but the value for money I feel was excellent. by scisteve (Mon 17th Jan 2022 3:39pm)
  • We use Candyfloss Cats. They’re a local company and very professional. They have this portal thing where you enter lots of info about your cats routine and emergency contacts etc. They send a service report after each visit with a photo of your cat. They have liability insurance too in case anything goes wrong. Really nice people, would recommend. by scisteve (Sat 29th Jan 2022 9:24am)
  • Same, it gives me a weird feeling of comfort and protection. Plus I discovered I like to sometimes mouth along to lyrics when walking with earphones in - and nobody knows. by scisteve (Mon 7th Feb 2022 11:19am)
  • Just got myself booked in for a half sleeve tattoo in April following on from recommendations on this sub for appropriate tattoo artists in the city. Can’t wait, man. by scisteve (Mon 14th Feb 2022 10:45am)
  • I like it a lot - the spring onion and ginger dishes they have are incredible - but weirdly their tofu dishes aren’t really very good. by scisteve (Thu 17th Feb 2022 11:05pm)
  • Has anyone got a decent amount of snow yet? Just a smattering here in southside. by scisteve (Fri 18th Feb 2022 7:18am)
  • It’s best to look for a tattoo artist that suits the style you want rather than just going by availability. This is going to be something permanent on your body so don’t just rush into the first available artist. That said, I do understand the frustration because a lot of artists are booked up for months at the moment. I don’t know what you want exactly but check out the artists at Aughra’s Eye near Central - Ria especially specialises in nature and portraits and does have availability at the moment about two months in advance (or at least, she did do a few weeks ago). by scisteve (Sun 27th Feb 2022 2:53pm)
  • Your safety is more important than a few quids worth of stolen goods. If the company is making you chase shoplifters please ask for this in writing and watch them back down. by scisteve (Tue 8th Mar 2022 9:54am)
  • Would love to but we already own two cats who are fiercely territorial - not sure how they’d react to another animal in their space when they barely tolerate the cat next door! by scisteve (Tue 8th Mar 2022 11:50am)
  • I do drive and would love to do that - unfortunately petrol is at an absolute premium right now and I’m not sure I could actually afford to drive around all day. This is super helpful though - thank you! by scisteve (Thu 10th Mar 2022 1:00pm)
  • Get the Petrol Prices app and take a look. One Tesco won’t have the same price as another. by scisteve (Mon 21st Mar 2022 11:06am)
  • Do you have insurance by Bought By Many, by any chance? They’re the UK’s biggest pet insurance company and at the risk of sounding like a shill, i highly recommend them. Anyway with them you get 24/7 free unlimited access to a vet via video call. You can also get video call behaviour adjustment sessions - not 24/7 (gotta book em) but they’re still free with your policy. by scisteve (Wed 30th Mar 2022 9:46am)
  • I absolutely loathe night clubs and haven’t been to one in years - but honestly this all sounds class. by scisteve (Mon 4th Apr 2022 8:43pm)
  • DELETED A few months before the pandemic I got a taxi home from town after an event one evening. The driver totally unprompted starts going on about political correctness and how he’s sick of seeing gays kiss on tv. He then asked me, a gay, directly what I thought of it. I said I am gay so I enjoy seeing it. He went silent for a few minutes and started ranting about race instead. I was really unnerved and asked him to drop me off several streets away so I could get away from him. Another time right before the pandemic the driver kept asking me what my holiday plans were, and when I said I didn’t have any he kept shilling for his brother’s holiday chalet in Ayr. Seriously the whole 25 min or so from the airport to home he was talking about this chalet and how fantastic it was and what a great and amazing place Ayr is. by scisteve (Thu 14th Apr 2022 4:22pm)
  • Have you tried Catflap up in Bearsden? I’d be surprised if they’re not taking more cats in. They’re cracker, got our boys from them. by scisteve (Thu 14th Apr 2022 6:07pm)
  • United Dental Care are pretty good. I’ve been a few times and always really professional and friendly. by scisteve (Sat 16th Apr 2022 12:51am)
  • Yes, Silla is the best place in the city for authentic Korean food. It’s not badly priced either. by scisteve (Fri 6th May 2022 9:46pm)
  • What did you get? I love their bibimbap and their fried chicken. by scisteve (Sat 7th May 2022 6:54pm)

  • I haven’t been since the pandemic began but I used to visit that place ALL the time. Is the schweinshaxe authentic? I used to love that. by scisteve (Sat 11th Jun 2022 11:46am)
  • Sweden? Shame, I just came back from Stockholm and would love to find somewhere selling Swedish or general Nordic food here other than Ikea. Deanston Bakery do a decent cardamom bun, mind! by scisteve (Sat 11th Jun 2022 4:42pm)
  • If you activate the medical ID by holding the power button for a few seconds - hopefully the person has listed a medical contact emergency number there you can call or text. Good luck. by scisteve (Thu 16th Jun 2022 7:22am)
  • There’s Forgotten Worlds in Stewarton which sells retro games and consoles. Bit out of the way in the middle of nowhere but worth a trip. by scisteve (Thu 21st Jul 2022 11:45pm)
  • DELETED Shawlands has approximately 6.2 billion beauty salons - why would you go to one that has terrible customer service when I’m sure there are some that are prized for it. by scisteve (Mon 1st Aug 2022 2:57pm)
  • Tried to get to Matthews from Seewoo but Garscube Road was closed. Nightmare. Generally I’ve come to prefer Matthews over Seewoo the last couple years. I just had high hopes once the original owners bought it back. by scisteve (Sat 6th Aug 2022 9:29pm)
  • Many many people with biology degrees end up working in clinical trials companies (Clinical Research Organisations or actual pharma companies). There are several around Glasgow, some definitely better than others, and many more nationwide that will allow you to be homebased. Always looking for decent people. by scisteve (Sun 7th Aug 2022 11:51pm)
  • I’m not really sure what you’re asking. Do you have a pattern to use? If not you’re going to have to go with a tailor and trust in their pattern design skills. If you find a pattern for a shirt you want that suits your fabric then you could perhaps ask someone to make it for you. You can hire people on Etsy I believe or you could just advertise here on /r/glasgow. You’ll need to pay for the pattern itself, the notions (buttons, interfacing, thread etc), any extra material that may be needed, and a labour cost as well. Mens formal shirts can be a tough sew because of the need for specialist techniques. The alternative is that you learn to sew yourself! Check out Sew Confident in the west end for beginner’s classes. Sewing is a ton of fun. Good luck! by scisteve (Mon 15th Aug 2022 10:08pm)

  • Literally just had my iPhone charging port replaced today by iRepair in Shawlands - and I think they have a branch in Finnieston too. Only took 45 min, six month warranty, works great now. Would recommend. by scisteve (Wed 14th Sep 2022 1:40pm)
  • I actually ordered from them last week and received today - took a week to arrive (although I assume the bank holiday has something to do with that), but I just wondered if I could pop out anywhere local to pick up threads in a pinch! by scisteve (Sat 24th Sep 2022 12:36pm)
  • I’ve actually already got tickets! Looking forward to it! by scisteve (Mon 26th Sep 2022 10:34pm)

  • Uncanny, hosted by Danny Robins - it’s a great story but it took place near Glencoe so not sure what op is on about. by scisteve (Sun 30th Oct 2022 12:05am)
  • Same. Went shortly after it opened in 2018 or so and got terrible service, bad food, and when I asked if I could have brown sauce for my breakfast the waiter said “uh, we don’t do that here”. My friends, it was a plain old full Scottish breakfast of subpar quality at a high price - you would think there would be brown sauce. by scisteve (Thu 3rd Nov 2022 3:09pm)
  • I went to a coffee shop in the southside in 2018/2019 or so called It All Started Here - who were advertising hot coffee into a frozen cookie cup without apparently testing it - because I now know this kind of temperature change makes the coffee disgustingly bitter. I gave them another chance and got the avocado toast, which the guy apparently had to go out and get avocados for, and it was served to me underripe and slightly crunchy. If they had just told me that they were out of avocados I could have ordered something else. Haven’t been back since. by scisteve (Thu 3rd Nov 2022 4:55pm)
  • I used to work in Stitling a few years back and love root beer. You used to be able to get it from a pan-Asian supermarket across the road from Baynes on Barnton Street. Alternatively, a place called The Greengrocer and Cafe on Port Street used to do Aussie Bundaberg root beer. No idea if either of these places are still around or whether they still sell it, but good luck. by scisteve (Sat 19th Nov 2022 7:34am)
  • I’m interested in this but what exactly is it? Is it like goth themed craft stuff? by scisteve (Mon 21st Nov 2022 10:51pm)
  • Has anyone had frost this year yet? I’m concerned we’re almost in December and no frost - my begonias are still alive which is very weird. by scisteve (Wed 23rd Nov 2022 9:02am)
  • You’ll be hard pressed to find any this time of year - most places have moved onto Christmassy bakes now. Your best bet will be late September and all through October when a couple of places in the southside might do it - but it’s still seen as a specialty dessert here so it’s not very common even then. To be honest baking one is very easy - all you’re really baking is the crust and it’s hard to fuck that up. The filling itself is very liquidy and sets after baking. Ingredients are all pretty standard - the only specialty thing you’ll need a can of pumpkin. If you can’t find one then make sweet potato pie instead - it’s identical. No really, it’s exactly the same. by scisteve (Thu 8th Dec 2022 8:51am)

  • Getting mighty sick of this weather - hope it perks up a bit soon. It feels more like we’re in the autumn than it does the summer, except for the 18 hours of daylight and the flowers all in bloom. by scisteve (Fri 30th Jun 2023 9:54am)
  • It’s on the pricier side but I really enjoy sandwiches from Deanston Bakery in Shawlands. Genuinely decent people serving massive high quality sandwiches. Highly recommend the chicken and basil sandwich, or the hummus and roast veg. Husband loves the salmon bagel. by scisteve (Fri 7th Jul 2023 2:00pm)
  • I’ve been to El Jefes twice now since it opened. The food was actually top notch (except a couple of items really needed more salt) - but it’s expensive and the service is run on a shoestring. The poor staff are running around doing the jobs of multiple people. Pleasant enough service but just slow. And yeah, tables are very small. Hard one to judge really - not a great experience but decent food. by scisteve (Tue 11th Jul 2023 10:21am)
  • How cold and dark are we talking? Is there any natural light at all? A good choice would be an aspidistra as they’re mega tough by means of drought tolerance, light, and low-ish temperatures - but prolonged frost exposure will kill them. They’re also very slow growing and take a while to get established. Dracaena trifasciata (aka sansevieria, aka snake plant) will tolerate dim light but it won’t grow very much. It’ll survive in cold temps as long as it doesn’t frost over. by scisteve (Mon 17th Jul 2023 5:13pm)

  • I, too, am a southside person. I took a couple of tests at Shieldhall and failed. I got myself a new instructor who recommended I take my test in Anniesland (this was before covid, when it was fairly easy to get a test). I had never been up there before, so my instructor took me on 3-4 lessons up there to get a feel for it. In the end, the test route didn't go anywhere near the cross itself and I just ended up driving practically in the countryside. There was one moment where I thought I flubbed it, having to wait in the middle of the road for a space to turn right across traffic, so make sure you know what you're doing there because there's a couple of those lights without dedicated green turn lights. I passed on my first try in Anniesland and overall I would recommend over Shieldhall. Just remember, if you make a mistake on the cross and end up in a different lane and on some random street - it's not necessarily over for you. Safely get back onto the route with your instructor's directions and you'll be fine. Just don't panic. by scisteve (Sun 10th Sep 2023 6:02pm)
