  • I've not heard of this one before. What is the magical jobby pole, that you speak of? by tonto1969 (Wed 15th Jan 2020 8:25pm)
  • Just use a razor to remove those pesky ear hairs, but be careful not to cut off small chunks of ear in the process. 👍 by tonto1969 (Fri 14th Feb 2020 12:46am)
  • I’m afraid that it’s noticeably getting much worse in Glasgow city centre. I made the mistake of walking up Sauchiehall street yesterday, and the decline over the past 5 years is shocking. One closed shop after another, manky streets and buildings covered in graffiti. 😭 by tonto1969 (Tue 25th Feb 2020 5:46pm)
  • Whilst I commend the people cleaning up the canal, this is only addressing the effect, and not the cause (i.e. people dumping their litter everywhere.) by tonto1969 (Tue 25th Feb 2020 9:06pm)
  • In my opinion graffiti isn’t helping Glasgow city centre. I’ve noticed that even shop windows are now being sprayed on in Sauchiehall Street. A street that already has enough problems, as it is. by tonto1969 (Thu 5th Mar 2020 6:00pm)
  • DELETED I’m afraid as someone who has paid more than once to have graffiti removed from private property, I don’t like to give it any encouragement. by tonto1969 (Thu 5th Mar 2020 6:12pm)
  • See the person downvoting me. I have a question, would you be happy with someone spraying graffiti over your home, or business? by tonto1969 (Thu 5th Mar 2020 8:32pm)
  • Ah, the ‘empty businesses.’ Glasgow city centre is now struggling terribly with so called ‘empty businesses.’ How can illegally spraying graffiti over ‘empty business’ windows, help the problems of Glasgow city centre? by tonto1969 (Fri 6th Mar 2020 1:17am)
  • I was in the same situation, and phoned the police 101 number. They told me that they would record the incident, however would take no action. Nice one! by tonto1969 (Mon 9th Mar 2020 8:37pm)
  • Our roads look like something out of warzone, and our streets are covered in garbage, yet they have found the money for free iPads and sanitary products! by tonto1969 (Mon 9th Mar 2020 8:59pm)

  • Actually, not necessarily a dealer nearby could be the problem. A local friendly government funded needle dispensary nearby could also lead to junkies shooting up in the vicinity. by tonto1969 (Tue 10th Mar 2020 12:50am)
  • Imagine being the poor cleaner who has to mop up a rancid ‘junkie jobby’!? 😂 by tonto1969 (Tue 10th Mar 2020 4:09pm)
  • That’s disgusting. I can’t stand junkies. One did a plop in my close, but thankfully it was like a rabbit dropping! by tonto1969 (Tue 10th Mar 2020 4:15pm)
  • I’m afraid that I doubt this tactic. I’m genuinely scared of confronting someone in my stairwell with a heroin filled syringe sticking out their arm! by tonto1969 (Tue 10th Mar 2020 8:25pm)
  • Eh, no. it's just another Glasgow post! by tonto1969 (Tue 10th Mar 2020 11:27pm)
  • To be realistic, not all of Glasgow was a slum at the time it was built. For example look at the West End, and the quality tenements built all around the city during the same era. by tonto1969 (Tue 10th Mar 2020 11:31pm)
  • In every city, there were/are slums. Paris, Barcelona, Madrid, etc, etc. The majority of Victorian Glasgow were not slum areas. For example, Shawlands, Dennistoun, Partick, Park Circus, Jordanhill, Newlands, Cathcart, Muirend, Pollokshields, Pollokshaws, Hyndland, and of course many more areas! In my opinion, the majority of Glasgow was not built as a slum. by tonto1969 (Tue 10th Mar 2020 11:42pm)
  • It was at a similar level about 3 weeks ago, and I thought that the old rowing club building at Glasgow Green would be swept away. It's only a matter of time, by tonto1969 (Wed 11th Mar 2020 2:10am)

  • Yes it was 2 years ago, but I am afraid that is the last reported news on the building that I can find. They were looking for buyers in early 2018, and then talking about demolishing it in summer 2018. by tonto1969 (Thu 12th Mar 2020 6:37pm)

  • I spotted three small shops in Glasgow city centre with adverts for hand sanitisers in their window this afternoon. by tonto1969 (Mon 16th Mar 2020 5:31pm)
  • I am not aware of a single supermarket raising prices during this crisis. So, is the problem really capitalism or actually the behaviour of individuals? by tonto1969 (Mon 16th Mar 2020 5:48pm)
  • Can someone confirm that this is for recycling bins only, and not normal bins. I got their their stupid letter this morning, but threw it in the bin without reading it; as I've more important things to worry about like paying bills, and finding toilet paper! by tonto1969 (Tue 17th Mar 2020 12:17am)

  • I have visited 3 major supermarkets in Ayrshire, and Glasgow today and the situation was grim. Almost totally empty meat, veg, and booze shelves, and that is just for starters. The moronic selfish panic buying has spread from toilet paper to EVERYTHING. The whole situation is just bloody pathetic. I actually managed to find a supermarket with several packs of pasta yesterday; I only bought 2 for myself. Returned the next day, and it had ALL gone. My only advice is to get out on foot, and walk from one small supermarket after another in the city centre, e.g. Tesco Express, Sainsburies, etc. After walking some miles, you will find what you want. by tonto1969 (Fri 20th Mar 2020 10:42pm)
  • I knew this was a serious situation weeks ago. However the full seriousness of it, and in particular how it could affect myself (employment,) bizarrely only fully sunk in yesterday. It's getting scary! by tonto1969 (Mon 23rd Mar 2020 7:17pm)
  • DELETED As I anticipated my main source of employment is affected by the government lockdown tonight. On a positive note, I managed to source a large box of beer in ASDA this evening. :-) by tonto1969 (Mon 23rd Mar 2020 10:12pm)

  • Just use Google Maps, it shows walking, cycling and public transport routes. by tonto1969 (Thu 2nd Apr 2020 5:03pm)
  • They want to encourage cycling in the city centre, but the amount of bike crime is shocking. Bikes lying everywhere with their wheels, etc stolen! by tonto1969 (Mon 13th Apr 2020 11:31am)
  • I am fed up going to the supermarket, and seeing staff not even adhere to basic social distancing/common sense, despite posters being plastered all over the shop ordering customers to quite rightly do so. Anyone else seeing this? by tonto1969 (Fri 17th Apr 2020 3:42pm)
  • Oh well, that solves the problem here. :-) by tonto1969 (Fri 17th Apr 2020 4:07pm)
  • They do have a choice. I was in a shop this morning with narrow aisles. 2 member of staff decided to block a narrow aisle yapping away to each other at close distance. I stopped and said 'excuse me' hoping that they would stop talking and and give me distance. They did neither. I've actually seen tons of other similar stuff. Total farce. by tonto1969 (Fri 17th Apr 2020 4:17pm)
  • I actually had a security guard who had made me queue outside the shop in the interests of 'social distancing,' then turn up at the bargains section and barge in directly in front of me (1 foot distance.) by tonto1969 (Fri 17th Apr 2020 4:22pm)
  • The bottom line here, is that I personally try to adhere to 'social distancing' whilst in shops. So should the staff, as it is in the interests of themselves, and the public. by tonto1969 (Fri 17th Apr 2020 7:02pm)
  • I appreciate that it is not an easy job given the current situation. Today, I was actually trying to follow the one way system the best I could. Two staff in close proximity stood on either side of the one way system at close distance talking. Neither of them would stop, despite me prompting them to do so. If we all try to adhere to 'social distancing,' it is is in best interests of staff and customers alike. by tonto1969 (Fri 17th Apr 2020 7:50pm)
  • Oh dear, it looks like some people out there don't think that 'social distancing' is a good policy. Good luck! by tonto1969 (Fri 17th Apr 2020 9:42pm)

  • No cars, one man, and a seagull. I was on my way to the shops at the time to buy 'essential food.' by tonto1969 (Sat 23rd May 2020 11:37pm)
  • Off on a tangent, you really need to move your car. I've set a reminder to move mine once a week. If you don't the battery will go flat, brakes begin to seize up, etc, etc. by tonto1969 (Sat 23rd May 2020 11:47pm)
  • I am in same situation. Broken molar just before 'lockdown.' I'd imagine only extreme pain constitutes a dental emergency? by tonto1969 (Sat 23rd May 2020 11:51pm)
  • Bad news. I have no medical knowledge, but was aware of the 'aerosol issue,' due to drilling etc. I thought the answer to the above would be to allow dentists to operate wearing medical grade masks, and visors covering their eyes? by tonto1969 (Sun 24th May 2020 12:39am)
  • Rather sad to see a once decent and serious newspaper, stoop to this level. by tonto1969 (Tue 26th May 2020 11:04pm)
  • No this is not the one where 'Churchill deployed tanks in George Square.' The event that I believe you are referring to occurred in 1919, and as another user has pointed out no tanks were actually deployed to the square. by tonto1969 (Sat 30th May 2020 7:24pm)
  • I'm not really in position to advise on bike types, but my vote goes for 'hybrid bike.' As for how safe is your bike in Glasgow city centre, I'm afraid that bike theft and vandalism is rampant in Glasgow city centre. There are guys with bolt cutters roaming about the town centre, looking for bike locks that they can cut through. If they can't cut through a lock, then they will try and pull the wheels and even handlebars off. Personally, I'd not leave my bike in any city centre street for longer than a few minutes. by tonto1969 (Sun 31st May 2020 7:45pm)
  • Eh, no thanks! by tonto1969 (Fri 12th Jun 2020 9:23pm)
  • I despair at the litter problem in and around Glasgow. The state of Loch Lomond/Luss after a 'busy day' almost makes me want to weep. I believe that the root of the problem is due to 'personal values,' and not lack of bins. by tonto1969 (Mon 22nd Jun 2020 9:19pm)
  • The whole of Glasgow city centre has been turning into a disaster zone for some years now. Was born here, and now sadly want to leave, before it's too late! by tonto1969 (Sun 28th Jun 2020 7:45pm)

  • This might sound stupid but do you lock your bike when leaving it in the train carriage? The reason I ask is because I saw a girl dragging her bike through Glasgow town centre today, after someone had just stolen her front wheel! by tonto1969 (Thu 10th Sep 2020 10:25pm)
  • I suppose that it looks like almost any other city from an aeroplane window? Once you hit ground level around Union/Argyll/Sauchiehall Street, I am afraid to report that it’s never looked so bad! by tonto1969 (Tue 15th Sep 2020 3:21pm)
  • Sorry maybe I described it incorrectly. Once a year you get a letter through the door, where you confirm where you live, so that you can vote etc. I spelt the title wrong, as it's known as 'canvassing.' • Glasgow city centre seems to have been turned into some giant ‘Junkie Theme Park’ in recent years. I actually feel more sorry for the poor residents, and business owners of the city centre than the junkies themselves. • In my humble opinion as someone who was born in the city centre some decades ago, and is extremely familiar with it; Glasgow city centre has reached a ‘new low point in living memory.’ I don’t think that its terribly dangerous yet, but I am seeing an awful lot of ‘police incidents.’ As a born and bred Glaswegian, I find the situation terribly depressing. I also have to add that this situation was building up before the COVID crisis. I noticed that the visible decline started around 5-6 years ago. I am genuinely concerned about the future of Glasgow. by tonto1969 (Sat 21st Nov 2020 10:26pm)
  • Does she always start her pitch with ‘excuse me’? I think I know the one of you mean (let’s face it, there are so many of them now.) by tonto1969 (Sat 21st Nov 2020 10:39pm)
  • I want out of Glasgow, not because I feel unsafe (yet,) but I reckon that the future can only be worse. The place is increasingly dysfunctional. Streets lined with beggars, blatant heroin problem, collapse of of local business exacerbated by COVID, massive increase in graffiti that is no longer cleaned up, etc, etc. by tonto1969 (Sat 21st Nov 2020 10:49pm)
  • What increasingly bothers me is that the SNP led council don’t seem to have proposed any concrete plans to clean up the increasing mess that is known as ‘Glasgow City Centre.’ They would appeared to be focused on another issue known as ‘IndyRef2,’ and other irrelevant nonsense, as our city rots. by tonto1969 (Sat 21st Nov 2020 10:54pm)

  • Pity you can’t lock your bike up anywhere in the city centre without junkies either cutting through the locks with bolt cutters, or pulling the wheels and saddle off. Plus there would appear to ‘friendly locals’ who think that it’s funny to jump on your wheels and leave them completely buckled. Saw one poor girl who looked like a visitor to Glasgow a few weeks ago, having to drag her bike through the town centre, after a thief stole her front wheel in broad daylight. Until the crime problem is addressed in the city centre, I would not recommend locking your bike up anywhere around Glasgow city centre. by tonto1969 (Thu 26th Nov 2020 6:56pm)
  • So sorry! Easy mistake to make. Interestingly if you look at old books a lot of them refer to it as Argyll Street. However, they could have just made the same mistake I did! by tonto1969 (Tue 1st Dec 2020 6:55pm)
  • That’s a bit of an issue for Glasgow, as one if its main selling points was being ‘one of the biggest retail centres outwith London.’ by tonto1969 (Tue 1st Dec 2020 7:03pm)
  • But since Glasgow city centre has heavily relied on retail for decades, what would a lot of Glaswegians do for employment? by tonto1969 (Tue 1st Dec 2020 7:19pm)
  • Technology started changing things some decades ago, and we were told then that we would all be working 2 days a week, and flying about in ‘cars with wings’ by now. Instead it looks like technology has instead destroyed lower level jobs that a huge number of people need, and even allowed certain jobs to be easily shipped out of the country (e.g. call centres, and much more.) by tonto1969 (Tue 1st Dec 2020 8:00pm)
  • There is no way the big online retailers would rent out city shops. They deliberately avoid physical presence, so that can slash overhead and retail prices to a minimum. by tonto1969 (Tue 1st Dec 2020 8:19pm)

  • Unfortunately, the drug addicts appear to have been given a ‘free run’ of Glasgow city centre, to the detriment of everyone else. The drug activity especially around Union Street/Argyle/Trongate is increasingly blatant. I don’t understand why the City Council and the ‘Poileas Alba’ have let it get to this stage? by tonto1969 (Wed 2nd Dec 2020 7:33pm)

  • I have seen similar. One pleasant summer’s day, about 2 years ago, I saw a guy lying back in Glasgow Green for everyone to see, with a needle sticking out of his leg! How has it been allowed to become some blatant, and open in the city centre. Where are the police!? by tonto1969 (Tue 15th Dec 2020 5:39pm)
  • I just don’t get why drug related activity in Glasgow city centre, has been allowed to become so blatant and open in the city centre. Where the heck are the police? It’s as if the ‘authorities’ and those in the City Chambers, have totally given up on Glasgow city centre! by tonto1969 (Tue 15th Dec 2020 5:42pm)

  • I reckon that the ‘friendliness’ plus point of Glasgow is exaggerated as it’s an ‘intangible.’ I mean how do you really measure if Glasgow is ‘more friendly,’ or not? • Had never heard of this place before. It looks like it was some place! Part of the Royal Polytechnic Warehouse on Argyle Street, when it was still considered a ‘fine thoroughfare.’ I believe that the building was demolished in the earlier part of the 20th Century, and the spot is now occupied by Debenhams. https://www.theglasgowstory.com/image/?inum=TGSA01055 by tonto1969 (Wed 30th Dec 2020 6:56pm)

  • The language already has enough recognition/visibility in Glasgow. A city where very few people speak it. It’s plastered all over police cars, ambulances, and even many train stations where the place names were never Gaelic in the first place. by tonto1969 (Sat 6th Feb 2021 6:06pm)

  • I was walking to the shops today and noted that the graffiti problem in Glasgow city centre is the worst I’ve ever seen it. Glasgow council spent over £650,000 on graffiti removal in 2020. This year due to the massive increase in graffiti, I reckon the cost to the council plus be millions, at a time of big budget cuts to council services. Sad to see such blatant vandalism take hold on the city centre. by tonto1969 (Fri 12th Feb 2021 5:19pm)

  • I try to do ‘productive stuff’ in 30 minute intervals. Let’s face it even when your motivation has collapsed, most of us can still do 30 minutes of work? I then try to increase the number of 30 minutes sessions I do on a daily basis. This is known as the Pomodoro technique: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pomodoro_Technique I say this as someone whose self motivation totally collapsed earlier in the year due to the effect of lockdown (isolation, and employment turned upside down,) at the same time as bereavement. The Pomodoro technique has really helped me ‘get productive’ again. One step at a time! by tonto1969 (Sun 21st Feb 2021 8:45pm)

  • Surely at this time, we need millions of funding for Glasgow city centre as priority, with its boarded up shops/economic catastrophe due to pandemic, refuse collection issues, major drug problem, lack of police, homelessness etc!? £17 million would have been a significant help for the increasingly struggling city centre. Why has this tax payers money been allocated to Govanhill instead? by tonto1969 (Thu 4th Mar 2021 12:39am)

  • It looks like this building was indeed at 286 Parliamentary Road, as confirmed by Canmore, who has posted the same photo as yourself: https://canmore.org.uk/site/163962/glasgow-286-parliamentary-road-lunatic-asylum by tonto1969 (Thu 1st Apr 2021 12:38am)

Plus to me, it really does look like Speir’s Wharf in the top left, which would confirm the Glasgow Caledonian Uni location. I will look into it more. Thanks! by tonto1969 (Thu 1st Apr 2021 12:35am)

  • I walked through Glasgow Green last Saturday, and some of the scenes were quite frankly disgraceful (without going into the details.) I also have to add that drinking alcohol outdoors is not permitted in Glasgow, and from what has been going on in Glasgow parks over the past 2 weeks, that law is justified. I say the above as an ‘alcohol fan,’ myself. by tonto1969 (Wed 28th Apr 2021 7:41pm)
  • I’d imagine that it’s just part of the mass vandalism currently taking place in Glasgow city centre? Graffiti sprayed all over shop windows, landmarks, listed buildings, and people’s homes. Supposedly we have CCTV installed all over the city centre, at great expense to the tax payer - obviously it’s pretty useless. Albert Bridge totally repainted only about 5 years ago to the cost of 3.4 million pounds, and I see that the ‘graffiti artists’ have already repeatedly targeted it, and it’s beginning to look quite badly defaced. Glasgow city council response so far, apparently almost zero, judging from the state of the city centre. They have of course been voted back in, so I’m presuming that things can only get worse! by tonto1969 (Tue 11th May 2021 1:04am)
  • I will never understand the mentality of someone who thinks that it is ok to spray paint over somebody else’s property without permission. Sadly, something that is clearly on the rise big time in Glasgow city centre. by tonto1969 (Tue 11th May 2021 1:12am)
