I'm not saying it's OK to just stop your car in the middle of the road and get out, but it's a symptom of a problem that could have, and should have been managed gradually over the literal century that it's been growing.

It's been at least 40 years since a car became a household staple like a TV or an internet connection, and yet still we have entire neighbourhoods OUTSIDE the city center where people can't own a vehicle.

Instead of forcing home owners to have permits, why not get rid of all the metered public parking spots and turn them into private bays so residents will have more available spots?

What about building actual multistory car parks every 2-5 miles?

Encourage travellers from outside the area to leave parking spaces free for residents by discouraging them from bringing a vehicle, by making public transport cheap and simple.

It may not be the most elegant or aesthetic solution but that's what happens when local councils refuse to spend money on any measure of proactive infrastructure management.

I fail to see how a Morrissons can open up with 300 parking bays while the actual government can't afford to buy some of that land themselves to turn into managed residential parking space.
