The good: Glasgow is a great place to live, people are generally friendly, open and up for a chat (vs. London, where people tend to have their blinkers on). It’s got great bars, restaurants and nightlife, and there’s been a LOT of regeneration and gentrification in the last few years, so it’s on the up and up!

The bad: parts of glasgow are still very run down, there’s religious/football tensions, and some places you just shouldn’t go at night. That’s true of a lot of places however. The weather can be grindingly, unendingly shite, weeks of overcast and drizzle without any blue skies whatsoever. That’s particularly true in winter, when you have to deal with SAD etc.

Alternatives: the west coast of Scotland is on average wetter but warmer, the east coast is on average drier but colder (with more blue skies). Personally I find Edinburgh too touristy for my liking, but it’s a great place to visit for a day from Glasgow. There’s Dundee too, but I’ve not really explored it.

Then again, have you thought about Leeds? Friendly yorkshiremen who make some cracking pies and ales!
