I have lived in London, Portsmouth, Southampton, Oxford, Imperia, Amsterdam and Berlin. While I miss specific things in all those locations I genuinely believe Glasgow is in the top two.

People; Glasgow shares an awful lot more in terms of social graces with the Dutch than it does with the English. Where it beats the Dutch in my opinion is that in addition to the civic duty of friendliness Glaswegians also place a high premium on making new friends/acquaintances. Where in the Netherlands people are very happy to chat but view that as a separate thing to the rest of their life, Glaswegians are more likely to bring you in.

Places; I love the West End and other than work hardly have cause to leave. I have friends who say the same about Denniston though, and what I take from that is Glasgow having decentralised “character”. When I lived in Oxford I would visit Brum for the IMAX about once a month, and I find this the biggest difference. I do see local boozers in Brum, but in Glasgow there are also small restaurant and bar spots dotted throughout the city, all with unique styles and offerings.
That’s not to say the place is all urban, there is plenty of suburbia if that’s your preference.

Climate; It rains about as much here as it does in London, difference is that it rains for shorter periods more often. It’s fairly predictable and you get used to it. Much like Brum, a lot of the reputation for weather dates back to the factories pumping smoke into the atmosphere, it’s not completely relevant these days. It doesn’t get as cold here in winter as the West Midlands, and snows less regularly too. Train services are better (none of that Chiltern we forgot winter was a thing pish). It is about as warm in Summer but the days are much longer.

Cost of Living; I find in the West End, with Mortgage, Bills and a good social life, you’ll need to be on ~40k. If you live with someone else, that drops significantly. Southside is really coming up and you can knock a fair chunk of that off. Denniston in the East too.

My two cents; Glasgow is experienced at it’s best as an Urban place. If you come take at least a year to live in the thick of it. Moving to Glasgow and staying in outer suburbia you will really be missing what it is that elevates Glasgow over the competition.
