There seem to be a few hardcore cyclists who take no excuses for people not cycling or who might be a bit put off by the idea sometimes. "Infrastructure is good enough", "weather's fine for a 20 mile cycle if you dress right" etc.

It's pish for cycling here. Not built for it apart from a few areas, drivers and cyclists aren't good at peacefully coexisting (admittedly better infrastructure would improve that a lot) and the pishy weather for much of the year is also going to turn a lot of people off the idea especially for longer commutes, even if you can dress for it and manage it most of the time it's no hard to understand that a lot of people aren't going to want to spend a lot of time on a bike when a gale is blowing cold rain directly into their face the whole journey.

I like the idea of the city being bike friendly - I live somewhere else right now that is a lot more bike friendly and it's something I like here - but some of the mad biking lovers seem to think because they don't mind cycling on the road in the dark in pish weather for miles with drivers trying to kill them that everybody else should think the same and accept cycling isn't a problem here.
