If you're looking for transport convenience Luss and Balloch are where you want to stay.

For interesting historical places I'd recommend Inveraray Castle.
It's not on Loch Lomond but you can get there with a reasonably sort bus trip from Balloch or Luss. Catch the bus that goes north to Oban. Just make sure to ask the driver if he goes by Inveraray.

Balloch castle is not much to look at. Just an old house with some frills. Wasn't even open to visits when I went there. The country park is very nice for a lochside picnic though.

One of the islands in the Loch has wallabies on it, but I don't know if they let members of the public on it.

If you're going to be in Luss check out Beinn Dubh. It's the squat hill overlooking the village and it gives you a stunning view over much of the loch. It's about 600 m tall.

Depending on when you're going (recommend july or august) Luss is also a great spot for taking a dip into the Loch. Just don't go too far out if you're not a strong swimmer.

The best view you can get around the Loch is Ben Lomond (you can see all the way north to Ben Nevis and south to Glasgow southside on a clear day), but getting there without a car kind of requires planning to stay the night at one of the lodges or campsites at its feet, otherwise you'll have to take the ferry to Rowardennan from Tarbet arriving at 10 and rush up and down the munro to get back to catch the ferry back at 16.15.
