I backpacked around Australia for a year on a working holiday visa. Getting unskilled work like labouring, factory work and fruit picking was really easy and basically paid for me to live, travel and party.
You do need need the initial outgoing of the flight and having a couple of grand in the bank though to get the visa. Could maybe get that from a credit card though.
