To bunker LNG these ferries would require either a LNG bunker lorry, local liquefaction plant or a LNG bunker barge, none of which are readily available now in Scotland.

Large scale hybrid battery use is becoming more common in the marine industry, particularly with short service ferries. Battery power is not intended to replace MGO but to complement it and reduce load on the generators.
Most Hybrid battery systems these days are paired with a DC grid which also dramatically reduces power consumption and emissions.

Scotland wasn't ready for LNG ferries 3 years ago when these were scheduled to be delivered and it still isn't ready now
