Christmas celebrations were banned in Scotland in 1640 by an Act of Parliament, so it literally was criminal at one point.
It was just another working day until 1958 which, all things considered, is relatively recent. And Boxing Day didn't become a public holiday in Scotland until 1974. Hogmanay was always the big holiday celebration in Scotland.
Wikipedia even suggests suggests that Scotland wasn't catching up with the rest of the UK until the 1980s.
