I think the tickets only thing is very common, a lot of people in this city typically just stay in and have a house party for this exact reason.
Also the 1st and 2nd of January are both bank holidays in Scotland and have widespread blanket closures. 1st is pretty much like another Christmas Day and the 2nd is more like another Boxing Day.
