go to the library, get some cook books out, find ones with store cupboard and kitchen utensil guides/recommendations at the front - I've found Jame Oliver and Jack Monroe good for this

for portion control you'll need digital scales, for food prep (doing most of your cooking at one time so you're mainly reheating or cooking sides the rest of the week) you'll need containers

things I like/ glad I own are:

metal spoon and cup measures that neatly sit together when not in use and can be separated when cooked (ie I don't have to clean and dry a full set of spoon measures when I only use the teaspoon) - I got mine from Nissbet's on Glassford Street

a larger than I thought I'd need chopping board - I bought mine in a big Sainsbury's

a dutch oven / heavyweight casserole dish with lid - mine is from M&S and they have a nice selection at the moment

an aluminum pot with two inlay tiers for steaming - mine was also from M&S
