I don't think that's entirely accurate. Edinburgh has the Royal Mile and a few streets which is dedicated to the tartan fluff you're describing but move a street or 2 back and you do have a real mix of shops. Glasgow used to be full of them. You could go down Hope or Union Street and get loads of shops with stuff you weren't going to see in River Island or Next but last time I was there it was all coffee shops, designer gin/vodka bars and offices.
Used to be you had the Virginia galleries for the off beat crowd, merchant City had tons for the suits or extravagant clubbers etc.

Glasgow was a market town and the independent stores mirrored that. There's very little left.

I absolutely agree with you on the way things are going and the cuts made by the high heid yins are not helping. I'd like to see a bit more of our money going towards the support of businesses in our main streets like Queen Street, argyle St, Sauchiehall St, St Vincent St etc.
