I can one up your pedantry here... You can actually get solder that you can use without an iron. Comes in little tape like strips that you wrap around the wire and heat with a lighter and Robert is yer maws sisters husband.
Having said that it's shite... So you're right... Just have a soldering iron and learn to use it... The things you can fix make it worth the learning.
