If you follow the Kelvin Walkway west from the botanics it connects up with the canal about a mile later at Maryhill Locks, and then you can follow the Forth and Clyde canal as far as you like in whichever direction you like, ending up in either Balloch or Edinburgh. The canal paths are usually runnable even in the snow and ice, unlike the pavements.
