Comment | I run this sort of distance too and while I echo the other posters in saying the canal path is good in daylight (both heading west towards dumbarton, east towards speirs wharf or north east out to kirkintilloch), it's not good in the dark, or when it's really wet (particularly if you go via the kelvin walkway).
Usually at night I run from town up great western road as far as Anniesland cross then cut down either at crow road or Anniesland Road down as far as Dumbarton Road and run back into town through Patrick and then Sauchiehall Street. Advantages of this route are that it's well lit, wide pavement and not too many roads crossing or interruptions (although it's not the most interesting route).
These are my two most regular routes (one daytime, on nighttime) obviously depending on where you are you'd need to adjust or add wee bits on for distance. I try not to run around rush hours in the dark because of being interrupted by cars but later at night or before sunrise it's fine.
