Let's say you're a wealthy Chinese parent. English is a good language to have for international career prospects so it's good to send your kids to a British University. Of course you want it to be a good one, you immediately think Oxbridge. But hang on, international studenting isn't cheap, and yeah you're loaded but let's see what other options there are? We have a quick nosey at the university tables, scroll through the usual suspects... Glasgow eh? You look it up. It's an ancient institution, hundreds of years old in fact. Has an excellent reputation for the quality of its teaching, a bunch of people who got units of measurement named after them were affiliated with the university. Glasgow's pretty cheap to live in too, that's also important. And hey, they've already got a thriving Chinese community so you feel like your kid will fit in better. And you hear Scotland's a lot more welcoming to foreigners than some parts of England... Wrap that all up and it's starting to sound pretty appealing ain't it?
