1. If you're doing social sciences you probably wont be able to take any classes out of the humanities department like medicine or science related. UK uni's are more course specific unlinke the comprehensive random choices you can do in the US. Except in some cases you could maybe pick up a language or business/economics classes.
2. Glasgow Uni is well known for their humanities programmes as they are an old institution with prestige and well established scholars. You may find their teaching programme a little dry/heavy. The majority will be self study and you will probably only have a few hours a week of lectures/seminars for each class you take. But I am sure there will be stimulating debates, lots of pupils with strong and diverging opinions, and lecturers that challenge you.
3. As an American student I dont know what you are used to. But for example, you'll be doing a lot of library sitting, self study, long essays and group presentations etc. As a fresher and especially if you stay in halls (kind of like dorms, but you have your own room) you will have a very busy and fun social life (if you choose for it). Also Glasgow has amazing night life, clubs, music venues and general arts community.
4. The strikes just mean you miss a few of your classes, which to be honest unless you are a tryhard you will be happy about (but you're paying for it which might be annoying). There shouldnt be any animosity between teachers and students, if anything as a student you support the teachers cause. They tend to move the schedule / extend submission deadlines because of the disruption.
5. Glasgow Uni is generally known as one of the more well respected, well established, 'upper echelon' unis in the UK. Some would regard it a bit wanky, it could be described as competitive and employers will view a degree from there in high regard. However the old prestigiousness of these institutions is sometimes relied upon too much and other elements can lack, like facilites, communication and real life transferable skills gained. That being said people always want to get in and go there, you will recieve a high quality of teaching, the course should be stimulating and challenging, you would get a lot of support from the uni in terms of career paths and social life would be vibrant.

Oh and yes, 20K is obvioulsy going to be a lot cheaper than university in the US, cause of your folks extreme educational-industrial complex. Uni in Scotland is free for us, usually int students fees cost about £10k a year. Is it a Masters of BA you're looking at? Hidden fees, not really (if you arent including housing, living or books in that) . You will maybe have to pay a graduation fee, and pay a tenner to replace your student card if you loose it.

Disclaimer: I go to university in Glasgow, but not to Glasgow University, so this is the best information I can provide through my personal experience/ what I have heard from various people who have gone there.
