I lived in tennements for the most of my 15 years in Scotland.

They have advantages of high ceiling, spacious rooms (if you get the right flat) and good soundproofing.

In one of them I lived at the ground floor, I had a small garden in front of my flat (with nice bushes hiding me from direct view) and there was a nice small garden in the back, where there were some tables and chairs and it was used by the neighbours to meet up, or to have BBQ.

Then I lived in that 1960's estate in Shawlands, just next to the park. There were constant problems with water leaking from the ceilings or with electricity. But the gardens in the estate were well maintained, and even when I moved out of there, I still used to go there to lay on the lawn and read the book (as I was living in walking distance).

Now I live in the newly built flat, and it's OK, but the quality of the flat is so bad. Cardboard walls, cardboard doors, only electric heating, surroundings of the beauty of a supermarket car park (although I am lucky to have a tiny garden just outside my window).

As for the houses, I am renting so I never considered houses, as the rent is significantly higher in the areas I was interested in. And as for those copy-and-paste suburbs, I would rather stick to tenements. Ok, you might not always be able to park your car just outside your window, but then you don't need to use your car that often - when I lived I had everything within five minutes walk: small and big shops, small and big parks, cafes, pubs, restaurants, pharmacies, bakery, surgery and a railway station taking me to the city centre in 6 minutes. The whole area was pretty leafy so it was nice to go for the walk as well. My car was used to go to work (when I was not cycling) or to do some big shopping (or to go camping for the weekend) so it was absolutely no problem, that sometimes I had to park it two streets away.

I would never change it for a cardboard house in a copy-paste estate with no big trees and a garden of the size of a post stamp. If I could afford an old house with a big garden in good location, that would be my first choice. But I would pick nice tennement over a small modern house with microgarden in the suburbs anytime.
