I've been on the other side of the interviewing table and you always get rejected folk who want to know what they 'did wrong', or who are upset that they didn't get the job when they met all the criteria, as though that guarantees you the position.

You didn't do anything wrong, you were perfect for the job. But unfortunately, there were several people who were perfecter, and there is only one position available.

Also, I would recommend that if this happens to you, wait a while and get back in touch with them (like, 6 months or a year later) and ask if they're looking for anyone - you may find that they suddenly see a benefit in doubling the manpower of that specific role after it's existed for a while. I've recruited people this way more than once.
