I covered my own rent living in central Edinburgh. First year lived in cheap halls, second year a bit more expensive on the private market but could do it, third year did an exchange where housing was a lot cheaper and got an Erasmus grant, and in my final year become a resident assistant for cheap living. It is possible and I didn't get family help.

Edinburgh is becoming more expensive as time goes on, but you can do it as a student if you have a part time job, are quite frugal or become a resident assistant. Cities like Dundee are pretty cheap aswell! It isn't always easy though, but student 'life' can be very cheap aside from rent considering the bars are really affordable and I mostly cooked my own cheap food.

You do have a point though - a lot of students do get their rent covered and I remember just thinking there was no way my family could cover that for me and I would never want them to. I decided to move out for uni, so I was willing to try my best and foot the bill. It will become worse as cities become more and more expensive - hall prices keep going up, and I'd say the average since my first and second year at uni on the private rental market has increased by about 100 quid and it just isn't sustainable.
