I moved here from overseas too, and tbh, I could scrape by, and sooner or later you get an ear for it. The most difficult bit is the use of scots, which is used pretty widely across the city intermingled with English. Like "what have you got in your pieces??"
Pieces = sandwiches.
"I'm going to get the messages" - groceries.


People really are awesome, and they'll think it's funny that you dont know what a "messages" is. They'll slow down, and try to help.

Dont expect a translation or any concession from First Bus drivers though - I've seen them boot people off the bus for not understanding their mumble through the perspex. My tip for them, would be learn to say your destination exactly like a local.
