I used to commute from Paisley to Hairmyres by train (Paisley -> Glasgow Central -> Hairmyres). Cost me about £120 a month for a season ticket.

I really recommend you drive if you're thinking of commuting into the area.

The trains are the old noisy diesel class 156 and it takes about 40 mins from Central to Paisley. They were relatively reliable but in the winter and heavy summer got disrupted often. EK seems to have its own climate due to the altitude so when Paisley/Glasgow are dry EK is full thick snow. Council don't grit the paths and they're pretty damn dangerous at times, I've fell over and hurt myself a bit.

If the trains are fucked there's no decent bus service to Glasgow (and for me Paisley) for a decent 20 minute walk through a dodgy as fuck woods back alley path. The bus from Central drops off on the carriageway and again you'll need to walk through the dodgy as fuck woods back alley path.

If you want decent options for lunch you've got Lidls/Greggs/D'Lish Deli (good but pricey)/Pizza Hut Takeout and Tony Macaroni. Everywhere else is in driving distance, not walking distance - there's a McDonalds/KFC on the carriageway etc.

Some nice places to go for a walk though around the actual woods.
