Whilst East Kilbride is pretty boring and not got a lot going on, there are plenty of shops, train into Glasgow in about 30 mins and depending on what area you are in you can get the bus into town in round about the same length of time. It's pretty big though and if you are away out in Greenhills, Whitehills, Lyndseyfield etc you will need a car as the bus and train options are pretty crap up that end. The schools were pretty good when I was growing up, St Brides in particular although I've no idea if that's still the case.

Despite it's size there's not a lot of great pubs, restaurants etc, so if that's something you're looking for then the southside is a much better option. Shawlands, Battlefield, Strathbungo, Mount Florida Cathcart have much more going on and all fairly well connected to EK by train, bus and you could drive there in 20 mins to see your pal.

You'll get far more for your money in EK but its whether you're willing to give up being closer to the city and all the advantages that brings with it.
