We had a really bad mouse problem, to cut a long story short we tried humane traps but the problem got too bad and ended up getting rid of about 24 mice using mostly good quality snap traps, we had advice from a proffesional and we had the same problem as you with letting them out, dont take out the steel mesh, also dont just put steel mesh down, even though they struggle to chew through it you dont want them to be able to pull it out, cram steel wool in and then cover in silicone or expanding foam, if you leave it too long like we did they will have babies which is where it will get really bad you need to eliminate all source of food for them, in total we had about 14 snap traps set at one time and dont waste your money on those plug in sound systems they dont work, the main thing you have to remember that we learned is you have to be persistent, even if you havent heard anything for a few days keep putting the traps down, it's been 3 months since we last caught any but we still set the traps, we even noticed at one point after we blocked all the holes we found a couple days later there would be new ones so keep an eye out for that and dont lose hope just keep trying and you'll beat them
