When I moved to Derby, I stayed at the top of Burton road and saw so many folk on spice I was scared to walk about the place.
Both cities have rough parts, but I reckon Glasgow is generally safer (again, I'm biased). The rough reputation is definitely watering down, I wouldn't be worried atall, especially in the area near the uni! You will notice it's a lot more tenement flats rather than houses, which is handy of you're a student. Also, most of my uni mates are English so you definitely won't be alone.
