More on the rock scene than the metal scene but all the comments here are certainly applicable to the rock scene too. Not seen too much in the case of rock bands being part of the same bill as slam bands, mind. Most I've seen is rock bills with a more tame metal bill than can fit in with rock bands or a rock band as the warm-up/opener for two metal bands etc.

As for M2tM, I'll add this: it's not rigged in the traditional sense. Certainly, it seems the past few years, the favourite and best quality band of the final always gets beaten by the band who brings more people because it means there's likely to be more "bums on seats" in the Sophie tent and tickets to Bloodstock sold. On the other hand, the intention of having Scotland as just one locale and different cities as different rounds this year was, frankly, bullshit when they could easily justify them each being their own competition.
