Comment | I thought America fought their war over keeping the slaves, rather than a lack of compensation?
I can't imagine you'd get people to fight because British Sugar in Jamaica didn't get a fair price for the people it used to own. I guess there would be civil unrest in the parts of the British Empire where the slaves actually lived right enough.
I do understand that I'm applying a wildly different moral standard to the past though, and that in comparison to "but they're darkies - of course we can own them" paying compensation to end the practice is the more noble act. |
