Yep. I've always thought that "black" in this context came from our coal mining days. The older generations (and particularly ones from around coal mining towns) use phrases like "black mockit" and "as black as a coalie" when saying something is ditry/disgusting/filthy. I figured that "black bastard" was an evolution of the same language and nothing at all do with race.
