I think acknowledging the bad parts of history of the past does very little to negatively affect attitudes to race issues of today. The fact we just act like we never had any dark slave trade etc history is definitely worse for making people apathetic to modern race issues in my opinion. Rather than your that's a shame in the past but it's behind us thinking people might just think "Scotland's never really had serious racial problems" or some nonsense like that instead since we're not really taught about it and have very little which recognises it publicly too.
