Think the main reason is that a lot of people renting are students or flat sharing and are maybe only looking for short term lets 6/12 months.

Getting a new sofa / wardrobes / beds / white goods etc isn't too appealing to that group due to the expense and then hassle of what to do with it once the let is over. More convenient to move into somewhere that already has the stuff (even if it is rubbish). The majority of places will be furnished or part furnished tbh, just the way the rental market is in Glasgow, very student centric.

No harm asking the landlord though. You might have more luck with unfurnished places if you look outside the city centre.
