Comment | I'm English (or at least I sound English), came up to Scotland for uni and have lived here ever since, for over 20 years now. In that time I have had only a couple of experiences of anti-English abuse and mostly they were in the context of drunken arguments with randoms. My accent does get commented on for sure and people definitely do sometimes make assumptions based on it - people are often surprised to find out how long I've lived here, or that I support independence, that sort of thing. But largely feels pretty inoffensive.
I'm not dismissing your girlfriend's experiences, by the way - but just offering an alternative viewpoint. If there was a widespread anti-English feeling I would expect to have copped it a lot more by now. |
