I studied at UoG and now live/work in Glasgow.

The West End (Hillhead/Kelvingrove area) is hugely dominated by University of Glasgow students.

The City Centre and East End tend to be predominantly Strathclyde University and GCU.

Socially you definitely want to be nearer 'your' University area.

I lived in Hillhead for 5 years, it was lovely but as mentioned above expensive on a student loan, and then horrifically expensive as a young professional. I moved to Dennistoun last year and can't even begin to describe how much better value it is. Our Street is a mix of older glaswegians and young professionals. A really nice atmosphere, and next to Alexandra Park - you're also on the way NE of the city for cycling.

There really aren't that many 'bad' areas - only areas where there will be definitely less of a student feel. Ask away - take a look on rightmove and see where the gaps are :)
