I live in the Sandbank Street part of Maryhill, and it's fine. You get your share of bams, but no worse than anywhere else in Glasgow. I'd go as far to say as Maryhill is a decent place to stay.
Near Lock 21 you're right on the Forth & Clyde Canal. And Dawsholm Park, Garscube Estate and the River Kelvin are all just a pleasant walk away. A lovely walk down to the Uni during the summer months. These places have been mobbed during the recent good weather, but, like any path and park though (anywhere in the world) avoid when it's likely to be too quiet.
Try and give a street name before you sign up though, because one or two wee pockets might be a bit shabby - particularly the Collina Street flats, and perhaps Fingal street.
