| Comment | Don't read this as an attack on NHS staff, because they are clearly the MVPs, but I find these lists quite dispiriting.
I'm a social care worker who's been going out in the community, thereby putting myself and those I live with at risk, throughout the lockdown. The work my organisation does is essential, and involves very close contact with people at risk of infection, during the worst public health crisis in a generation. Even when PPE provision was laughable, we did the best we could. There has still been no word on testing for staff.
Our efforts got us all a one-time £50 bonus, along with a 30p 'raise' which conveniently conformed our wage to the minimum requirement previously agreed between my org and the Scottish government. That they tried to pass this off as a magnanimous gesture, and somehow linked to the pandemic, was beyond insulting.
Anyway, everytime I see these lists I get a bit sad, because me and my living wage colleagues out here in the social care sector are basically forgotten. Meanwhile my bro, who's an orthopedic surgeon, gets tasty discounts left and right. At least the Halfords one is nice, if only because most of us can't afford to run a car.
