Happened to my last roommate, though instead of trying to cut through the big expensive bike lock he had, they literally cut out the bannister it was attached to.
We're pretty sure it was some trades people that had been doing work in our close a few days before, they'd looked a bit dodgy and had been seen by a neighbour coming back in after the work had been done for some reason.
