Getting the shit kicked out of you by your parents (in my view) doesn't really emphasise or encourage good behaviour. It enforces the idea that if you don't like something, you deal with it by giving it a hoofing. Violence is the norm.

It's the slapped wrist "punishment" for doing wrong on a societal level that I was referring to, where the little shits get away with being NEDs, basically. There's no comeuppance. They harass people, drink on corners, engage in antisocial behaviour and nothing is done so they just keep on doing it.

I've been to Sweden and it's lovely. I agree that most kids are brought up well, but the family I stayed with did say that it's not all perfect. They're seeing an increase in drug abuse and the issues around it. They're in Stockholm as well. What struck me was that most of the discussions I had about this were with their eldest son, who was only 15 when I was there. As you say - well-informed and intelligent.
