Aye, it's a combination of Reddit having a very particular demographic that a lot of users will fit into (young, liberal, bit geeky etc) as well as the karma system encouraging people to say things pleasing to the group. Inevitably people just start expressing only the opinions people will agree with - case and point "unpopular opinion" subreddits only posting popular opinions.

Love it or loathe it, the anonymity was one thing that 4chan did well in some respect -especially on the smaller boards. You could express an unpopular opinion and, aye, people might have got upset with you, but if you posted again in the future there was no way of *knowing* it was you, meaning each individual post or comment was judged on its own merit to the reader in some extent.
