"Proper" flying (as opposed to doing loop the loops and crashing into buildings for a laugh...which is fine if that's yer jam), is a highly demanding activity.

It involves flying the aircraft accurately, managing radios, managing systems, monitoring engines, looking out for other aircraft, constantly making decisions based on what-ifs. There's so much to it beyond first glance. Sims give people a chance to experience this from the comfort of their own homes for a fraction of the cost.

I was training towards my PPL a few years back but developed an ear condition that affected my balance and I had to stop, that and it was bloody expensive.

Everyone's different but for me, it's the appeal of "proper" flying, anywhere in the world on multiple different types of aircraft.
