To be fair to them I have known a case where a stuck calliper lead to a tyre blow out. So they may have been exaggerating slightly but it’s still a pretty dangerous fault to be driving about with.

If brake pad wear is uneven from side to side there’s a high likely hood it will be a stuck calliper I’m afraid, so that’s probably why they said that despite not having taken it all apart. If they put it on a ramp and the wheel did not turn easy then they would have all but confirmed it, but they’re not going to know for sure until they pull it all apart, which they won’t do because that alone would be an hours labour charged to you.

Basically they could have told you 100% what the issue was but you’d be walking away with a bill of £60+ rather than £18. Most garages aren’t keen on people bringing their car in, finding out how much it costs and then leaving, the investigation is usually free if you get the work done but everywhere I’ve ever worked they will charge you if you want to take the car away.
