A weir is basically an artificial waterfall, often used to maintain the water level upstream. For instance, the Clyde has a tidal weir to separate the tidal section from the freshwater section. Weirs are extremely dangerous, as they create currents which are very hard to escape from, and just roll you about until you drown. Portage them.
