This may be an urban myth, but I believe that most graves plots are 'leased' for 99 years. After 99 years they can remove the stone and sell the plot for a fresh coffin coming in.
It does sort of make sense when you think about the literal millions of people that must have died in Glasgow over hundreds of years, yet we don't have millions of graves.
